ProZ.com powwow: BYOL (Bring Your Own Language) Powwow
March 19, 2005, 2:30 pm
BelgiëBrusselsIn personEngels
Venue:
X-it Brasserie, Rue des Pêcheries 2, 1170 Brussels (Watermael-Boitsfort). (Near motorway exit, reachable by metro(Beaulieu stop)and by busses 95, 96 and 41-get off at Place Keym. Parking should not be a problem and it's free. We'll be 3 km from Avenue Louise and 4 km from the Grand Place and Manneken Pis.
Time: from 2.30 p.m. (ie 14.30) until.........
Theme: SOMEONE PLEASE SUGGEST SOMETHING-or it will just be a friendly get together to meet with fellow Prozians. That doesn't sound so bad either come to think of it.
Menu: 28 € p.p.: includes a welcome drink (after that you're on your own for drinks), munchies, a very vast Belgian-style cold buffet that also includes an assortment of different salads, followed later on by a warm buffet with 3 main dishes-waterzooi, boeuf bourguignon and curried lamb. Vegetarian dishes can also be ordered, but you have to sign up and confirm in time (2 or 3 days notice). Within the next couple of weeks, the brasserie will be online with their site, and you can see pictures, etc.
This is a Belgian powwow for ALL Prozian translators and interpreters in Belgium who feel like spending a pleasant Saturday afternoon and part of the evening meeting with Prozian colleagues in a cozy Brussels brasserie in the greenery of Watermael-Boitsfort (aka Bruxelles 1170). No matter what your language. You won't be stuck with just speaking English either-so please sign up and bring your language with you.
A special welcome is also extended to Proz colleagues across the borders-there are motorways straight to Brussels from Germany, France, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and it's a mere train ride away from the big Isle out there in the North Sea. What a great excuse for a weekend in Brussels! You should be able to book a good hotel for a very reasonable rate if you book via one of the online agencies.
So hoping to have scheduled this between the winter school break and the Easter holidays, at a time when we all have lots of work but that doesn't have to been done during this particular weekend...
Looking forward to seeing you March 19th!
Better late than never. Here is the URL for the Powwow venue. Happy surfing. http://www.xitlabrasserie.com/horeca/default.jsp

I'm new in the site, getting used to everything and I'd love to meet my colleagues in Belgium! Count Spanish from Venezuela as a language in teh meeting! But I can't make it for lunch, will it be a problem? And, can I go with my husband?
I am very sorry to cancel at the last minute but my son has come down with a serious bout of the flu. I have been up half the night taking care of him and he really needs me around today. If I still have to contribute financially please let me know.

hotel?

Just wondering if anyone else is booking a hotel (who hasn't already done so that is) and if so, if they care to divulge which one? I was thinking about this in terms of sharing a cab to the bistro.......?

I'm just now starting to think about booking a hotel. And SN Brussels Airlines has a seat sale from/to Berlin. How far have you gotten?

is what I'm looking at for now, also because they have a parking garage on site which is appealing. The price is also decent on bookings.be.

Looks fine. 69 € for a single/double room. Breakfast is a little expensive for 19,00 €. hrs.de has the same price for that night. Is there nobody from Brussels who knows an acceptable hotel near the X-it Brasserie?

breakfast was a bit pricey - there were quite a few hotels in that price range and also a couple near the brasserie - maybe writeaway could put us on the right track???))

Absolutely,

Writeaway or anybody from Brussels as a matter of fact. For 19,00 € you can have a wonderful breakfast anywhere else. Or a normal but fast breakfast at the King of the grill with the Scottish name for less. )
I have to say that the quality of the rooms at the NH is very nice. At least in Cologne...

NH in Amsterdam is also quite nice and that's true about the breakfast option though I know a nicer place on the grote markt (grand place) that's got great huge mugs of coffee......anyways, suggestions are open - centre is a good location for other reasons as well writeaway???

If you are driving and want to stay near the Grand Place/Grote Markt, then make sure the hotel can provide parking. What hotels did you find near the brasserie?

What about Sunday?
Feb 4, 2005
I'm planning on flying in on Saturday and flying out on Sunday. I can either fly out in the am or the pm. Seems a shame to just leave without seeing the city. Anybody feel like an outing on Sunday? What do you suggest, writeaway?

Well, there are so many things to d and to visit in Brussels that I'm sure you will find soemething, no doubt on that ! It depends of course what you want to do, but Grand'Place, Mannekepis, and the rest are easy to find ! Also don't forget to try the cooking in Belgium, also on Sunday ... Choose a good restaurant and take your time to taste the food ...

My (local) advice would definitely be for people to stay 'in town' - Boitsfort is very quiet and residential.
X-it, however, is very easy to get to from Beaulieu metro station (Line 1A, direction Hermann-Debroux) – comfortably under ten minutes on foot from there.

Or you can get a taxi; however, seeing as this is Brussels, you'll probably have to tell the driver the way, yet will still end up paying a king's ransom upon arrival...
Alas, I can't offer to put anyone up as we have family over from GB that same weekend. ▲ Collapse
