prematurely twisted knickers, LOL Mar 15

I'm not too worried just yet. I don't think memoQ is going to take away the desktop version and force us to use a much worse online version anytime soon. It wouldn't exactly be in their interest. I know that about 80% of their money comes from LSPs and enterprise stuff, but I think they also know that the lowly translator can't be removed from the equation just yet.

Desktop memoQ, is safe for now

Preview Mar 20

A client shared a preview of that web editor. I'm not impressed. Too much space wasted in the Translation results pane and an awful, dark source column background.

The "web editor" that you see in videos is likely not what MemoQ intends to create. MemoQ currently has a web editor which is a heavily stripped down version of MemoQ. It is more a project management tool than a CAT tool. I suspect what MemoQ intends to create is an entirely new product.

We very rarely work disconnected anymore Mar 20

Am I wrong in saying that we rarely work disconnected anymore?

With most solutions for job management, email, dictionaries, bilingual references, conversions, meetings, client job portals, multilingual law repositories, MT, AI, and a myriad of other tools we use daily already being cloud-based, and if we add that most translators will do a lot of research online during jobs, being connected is no longer optional. In most places, availability of the Internet reaches almost 100%, being your own Wi-Fi at home the biggest bottleneck for most people. Wherever the Internet does not work, your smartphone comes to assist and connects you to the net. It is either connected or frozen today. It's just the world we live in.

Yes, I love the power of memoQ as an application and installable server today, but if they can devise ways to deliver the same power online while keeping my resources private and protected... I think it would be alright!

(How sensible would it be to send a letter to the likes of Google, Linguee, or Eur-Lex to demand a version of their services in DVDs you can use while on Planes, Trains, and Automobiles?)

Asymmetrical broadband connections Mar 20

No one said we want memoQ to be delivered in DVDs. Downloading is easy. Uploading is the hard part, at least with an asymmetrical Internet connection, which seems to still prevail in some parts of the world. I have better things to do than wait for all those resources I have created in 17 years of hard work to be uploaded to the cloud at a rate of 1 Mbps.

Also, we saw what happened the last time translators started mindlessly uploading all their work, segment by segment, to various "free and open" online TMs and "collaborative efforts": AI tools stole all that content to train themselves.

The writing has been on the wall for some time Mar 20

Many desktop CAT applications require users to activate or validate their product or license number via a server. Not sure where memoQ stands on that. No server connection, and we'll likely run into trouble.

I'd rather see a future desktop memoQ translator pro in the Adobe Creative Suite model.

(in)ability to select text in source text + target text at the same time in web-based CAT tools Mar 20

Hi Epameinondas,

Since you seem to know about OmegaT, I figured I'd ask here whether it is possible to select corresponding pieces of source and target text in the grid (at the same time) in OmegaT?

I've explained this feature on my blog at:

https://michaelbeijer.co.uk/what_i_look_for_in_a_cat_tool (in a a post about what I consider non-negotiable features of a CAT tool)

1. Ability to select corresponding pieces of source and target text in the grid
When translating long segments, I like to move down the source and target sides, selecting corresponding pieces of text to ensure I don’t miss anything. A good CAT tool should allow you to make two different selections at the same time. This is one of those features you don’t realize you need until you try it.”

dual-text-selection-in CAT-tool-grid

I've been testing OmegaT lately just for fun, and am curious to see how it stacks up to memoQ/CafeTran, my daily drivers.

If memoQ does end up becoming a web app, I'm worried that this feature (among many others) I have come to rely on might disappear.

For example, I know it isn't possible to select something in the source text and the target text at the same time in most other web-based CAT tools such as Phrase, etc.

No, you can’t Mar 20

You can’t have a source segment part selected while working in the target segment.

This is a handy feature of memoQ. In fact, I submitted a feature, a long time ago, asking them for the ability to highlight parts of a segment in different colours, to be able to see what goes with what in large and complicated sentences, like the ones in legal texts. They did not implement them, but soon after they introduced the feature that lets you mark parts in three different colours: blue fo

This is so crucial that I didn't realize that it isn't possible in every CAT tool Mar 20

Michael Beijer wrote:

Select a part of the source segment and a part of the target segment and add them to the plain text TMX TM or the plain text TSV TB. Why make things needlessly complicated? Who needs databases nowadays?

Why would you use a web-based CAT tool?
