The story in Le Figaro says France 2 cited "problèmes informatiques," "fewer subtitlers than usual" and "blagues" among the American translators as contributing to this bavure.
If that is so, then that is unfortunate. A translator got fired.
Such a translator should be on guard. As ever, translate faithfully, accurately and without showing bias.
Especially when it comes to Nicolas Sarkozy, who has close ties to certain media bosses and journalists and who is not above posing as the victim of undeserved "caricaturization."
I refer to you an April 28 article in Le Monde in which Sarkozy complains about the cartoonist Plantu.
I work on the team that translates France2 news. Fortunately, I wasn't working the night the of the 22nd when the "joke" was mistakenly broadcast on TV5.
For the record, here's what happened:
The network connection on one of the computers kept going down and the team called for help from the IT department.
They isolated the problem, and the translator set about doing his 9-minute portion of the newscast.
On occasion, a few translators on our team feel the need to amuse the others with a joke or play on words. These are routinely removed or corrected when the translation is reread by the entire team before being sent out.
But, due to the election results that were announced the night before, the newscast was longer than usual. It was not that the team was not understaffed (as reported by France2 management), the newscast was longer, hence the workload was greater, adding extra pressure to the translators to get the job done in time for broadcast.
The team corrected the segment done by translator who slipped in the joke (which was in very poor taste). But, probably due to their haste, the corrected version was not saved properly and the previous version was sent for broadcast.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not defending the translator. I, for one, think it unprofessional to use the medium for slipping in jokes or editorializing, even for the amusement of our colleagues. I don't do it, nor do most of the people on our team. This "bavure" was an accident waiting to happen. Most of us are extremely upset with the translator who made the joke, and I think he deserves to be fired. It was irresponsible and highly unprofessional. Furthermore, his actions have jeopardized our future at France2.

Merci pour les explications, quonundrum. Et je souscris totalement à tes derniers propos.
Mais j'en profite pour demander une précision : j'ai lu à plusieurs endroits que la personne avait été "licenciée". Mais j'ai lu aussi qu'elle était "pigiste". Donc, je comprends qu'il s'agissait d'un traducteur freelance, en somme. Un freelance ne peut pas être licencié, puisqu'il n'est pas employé !
Donc, j'aimerais bien y voir un peu plus clair...

Que de telles drôleries se pratiquent au sein d’une équipe de soi-disant professionnels ayant un accès direct à l’antenne d’une chaîne de télévision prestigieuse (pour ne pas dire de renom mondial) est le reflet, me semble-t-il, d’une absence de professionnalisme de part de l’ensemble de l’équipe - tant les participants actifs que les observateurs qui laissent faire (et qui rigolent sans doute comme tous) - et signal d’un sévère manquement au niveau de la direction de l’équipe.
Vous allez me dire que je suis du « vieux temps », peut-être… Mais le fait est que je me souviens encore de l’époque où je travaillais à la BBC (homologue anglais de France Télévisions - France2) - il y a une trentaine d’années…
De telles pratiques (et il y en avait, bien sûr… il y a des petits malins partout !) conduisaient alors non seulement au licenciement pour faute grave du ou des coupable(s). En plus, tant le chef de l’équipe que chaqu'un de ses membres recevait un « black-edged memo » - appelé ainsi pour son effet dévastateur, similaire à celui d’un faire-part de décès bordé lui aussi en noir - pour lui rappeler son rôle en tant que modérateur au sein de groupe. Et ce document restait au dossier de l’intéressé jusqu’à l’âge de retrait, comme témoin à la fois muet et trop parlant d’une jeunesse un rien trop hilaire.
Moi, à la place du patron de TV5, j’aurai mis tout le monde dehors!
Ah ! Comme les choses changent…

J'ai eu l'indicible honneur de participer en direct live (oui, moi j'avais ma picture animée dans le cadre) à un Hebdo du médiateur (France 2 après le JT de 13 heures le samedi) le 28 avril 2001 pour faute autrement plus grave commise par des gens qui en commettent toujours et encore à l'antenne et en direct ... et sont toujours aux mêmes postes.
En foi de quoi les choses ne changent guère et ne sont fired que ceux qui en ont le profil.
Que notre désormais illustre inconnu ait fait le zouave, c'est son prob et je n'approuve pas forcément, quoique c'est assez puissant, mais que le reste n'ait pas assuré, cela me rassure ... if you see what I mine de crayon : c'est calamiteux, mais très représentatif.
Bon, pas de boulette en ces jours sulfureux,

Il y a beaucoup d'histoires de ce genre, dont certaines sont des légendes urbaines, mais celle-ci j'en ai été témoin.
