highlighted (in bold)

I think this simply means that the text is 'highlighted', and that this may be in bold print, i.e. 'the ... text is highlighted' or 'the ... text is displayed in bold'.

neutral Harry Borsje : I think we should give the author more credit for his (deliberate, I'd assume) choice of words (on anything beyond a CGA screen I would agree with you)

Harry, perhaps you're right... but you would need to see the actual screen being referred to!

double brightness

The fields are made bright to ensure the user sees where he has to provide a value. Why it is double, is a mystery.

The fields for which the entered values have been rejected (i.e. are incorrect) will be shown/displayed in double brightness.
Peer comment(s):

agree Harry Borsje : I guess in banking they still use ancient monochrome CRT's where single (normal) and double (high) brightness made sense

Thanks, Harry! It seems ages ago but I do remember using one :-)
agree Jack den Haan : With Harry too. Typical of the green-screen IBM-look on mainframe systems (often ported to Windows-based systems and still in use today).

Thanks, Jack!
disagree Gordon Park : I think you're getting too involved with banking, IBM etc!! Surely this just means displayed as 'bold' or 'highlighted' text?

I don't think so... Definitely not according to the Microsoft terminology lists. What I have seen is that text is shown in a different colour when it is incorrect (i.e. red).
agree Dave Calderhead : this is possible where old midi (AS400 etc.) and mainnframe applications are still run, as is Gordon's answer
