How do I open an SDL Trados Studio project file in MemoQ?
I received the project file (not return package) for SDL Trados Studio together with the TM in the same root folder as the project file and the source language fiiles and target language files (.sldxliff, for the ones for the source language English there are also the original .docx files) in sub-folders. But how do I open this project file directly in MemoQ?

You can't do that with a Trados project file. You can only import a Trados package or an sdlxliff file.

If you really know what you are doing, I think it might be possible to create a Studio package if you have all the component parts, by zipping the various files & folders into a package (*.sdlppx), and tweaking the contents of the Studio project file (*.sdlproj) but this is most likely beyond the asker's skills. I seem to remember there is also some stuff on GitHub that might help with this.
It might also be that Frederick is just using the wrong terminology. In any case, I would be interested to see his file/folder structure and learn more about exactly what his client wants to achieve here.

I'm going to guess the project was delivered to you in the .sdlproj format/extension.
If not, you can ask the client to provide a .sdlxliff file, or if you have access to SDL Trados Studio, you can open the project and export the bilingual .sdlxliff file yourself.
After that, you can work easily with the file in MemoQ.

After that, you can work easily with the file in MemoQ. @Fredrik: you mentioned that you have a pair of sdlxliff files and a TM. That is enough for work in memoQ. You don't need to mimic a Trados package and then a return package. First import your Trados TM into an existing or a new blank memoQ TM (you can do it with right-click in the Translation memories view with a TM selected, then select 'Import...' in memoQ). Then you import your sdlxliff file from the Trados target folder into memoQ as you normally do with other translatable files.
Once you are done with your translation, replace the existing sdlxliff file in the Trados project target folder with the new sdlxliff file as translated in memoQ. Keep in mind that there are two identical sdlxliff files in the Trados project folder. You should replace the target one.
Finally, your client does not need the entire project folder. They gave it to you because they expected you to use Trados. In return, they only need your translated sdlxliff file.

Trados and memoQ are two different programs with their own generic files. The only eXchange format is xliff for translatable files and tmx for TMs.
If you don't want to create a new project, you can use an existing one. Just add your target sdlxliff and import your TM as I described above.

I am creating a new project in MemoQ now and imported the target .sdlxliff files. But the TM I was given is for English in UK, not for English in USA as the project is set for. Can I still use this TM? I chose Yes, but when the project had been created the TM was still not imported (I cannot see it under Translation memories).
I accidentially imported all TM entries to other translation memories in the list under Translation memories. I then tried to filter for segments after 09.30 ... Sorry, I can't control or see what you are accidentally doing. If you have a BE TM, then why you create an AE project? Technically memoQ still can import a BE sdltm into its own AE TM. Just try and see if that works for you.
What regards your mistakenly added TUs, you should filter by date when the TUs were modified rather than imported. If you imported them yesterday but they were modified a half year ago, you have to filter by the date that was a half year ago.

What regards your mistakenly added TUs, you should filter by date when the TUs were modified rather than imported. If you imported them yesterday but they were modified a half year ago, you have to filter by the date that was a half year ago.
However I suggest that you filter them by ID (default behavior) and manually find the first segment from the TM that you have imported by mistake. Then remove all TUs from that first segment to the end of TM entries.
