I appeal to all those who have experienced a text editor (free or not) enabling them to compare two texts (or more)and highlight the words which were translated differently in a set of texts on the same suject.
Up to now it did not seem necessary, but aftr a traumatic experience of checking "by hand" 10 technical files for consistency, I think I ought to mmove with the times.

Notepad++ allows you to open multiple files and then tile them side-by-side. However, Notepad++ doesn't allow you to highlight text -- it is, after all, a plain text editor.
2. http://winmerge.org/
WinMerge will compare two files and mark the differences. Is this what you're looking for? You can also edit the files in WinMerge, if you really want to.
3. In MS Word, open the two files you want to compare, and minimise all other windows, so that you have only two windows "open". Then right-click the taskbar and select "Tile windows..." to see the two windows next to each other, perfecty resized to fit on the screen.

MS Word can easily compare two files:
Review > Compare (Word 2010)
Tools > Compare and merge documents (Word 2003)
On the other hand, if you need to analyze files for general terminological consistency rather than mere textual differences, this task is well beyond the capabilities of any text editor. Worse yet, I seriously doubt it can be done by any software currently on the market.

In my opinion BBEdit is the one of the most versatile editors available. It can compare both files and folders with highlighting. If you are dealing XML files, oXygen XML editor is pretty good for file comparison as well (available on various platforms).

Thank you all for your suggestions. I gather that the et choice would be "BBEedit", but of course it is for Mac uwers!
I can still try Word's system and also Winmerge; I did not know about either.
