My main question though- Would any of you have ideas on how/where I can buy/download Polish fairy tales? I live in in Rheinland Pfalz in Germany, have tried amazon, ebay, bookshops but haven't been able to find anything!
Wanted to surprise my Polish husband with some Polish fairy tales for him to read out to our 2 year old... Not sure how I'll illustrate the "book" without knowing the language but that hurdle will get crossed later...

I know you're looking for books, but maybe you'll be interested also in some children's songs. It happens that I have a lot of mp3 files with children's songs popular in the 80's (my childhood) as they were linked to a tv program emited on public tv channel.

Allegro is a good idea, but if you can't get through language, you may also try eBay with searching set for Polish sellers. Since Polish can accept payments through PayPal, they can now also sell things abroad. And you can search Polish offers through eBay website in your language.

Merlin is one of the biggest internet stores in Poland. The book in the link is a reprint of the classic version with illustrations by Jan Marcin Szancer. Illustrations in some new Polish fairy tale collections are, to put it mildly, atrocious.

As Pawel pointed out, the illustrations nowadays are pretty atrocious at times. I've had the same experience on the English front. With the new Ladybird Cinderella, Rapunzel etc.- The totally "animation type" illustrations of the new editions are just so depressing ... So I am wary of going to sites and just ordering anything.
I'm interested in finding a particular collection or a particular book with traditional fairy tales and nursery rhymes. Something beautiful that you might remember from your childhood with stories that every Polish child should/would know. Or fairy tales, nursery rhymes you've come across in the form of a book, cassette, CD whatever. And in case you know of a website with the (well written, or a classic) text of a famous fairy tale (for children), well that would be very welcome too.
Hubby and his Polish friends don't seem to have read anything in their childhood... So asking him didn't help much!

www.merlin.com.pl - however it works only in Polish, but they have very good selection of books and send them abroad for a reasonable fee.
