Hello, everybody.

I'm new to the translation industry and an agency just messaged me showing interest in my freelance services. They asked me what my rates would be for translation and proofreading (individually) and I'm not sure what to say, since it's my first paid opportunity since I graduated.

I don't know which types of documents they get and give to freelancers, the only information they gave me so far is that they need DE-PT freelancers.

Your competition is German -> English -> Portuguese.

German to English is expensive (both 1st world languages + German has less words than English or latin languages to express the same meaning). English to Portuguese is much cheaper.

In your shoes I'd quote 0.15EUR/word for translation. Your goal is to be just a bit cheaper than piggybacking a translation over English and having two translators.

If you get hired as a reviewer, chances are you will be reviewing a translation that was first translated into English and then Portuguese. It's not necessarily bad but the translation will only be as good as the weakest link in that chain.

Brazil? Agency? I suggest USD 0.10 per word for translation and USD 0.04 for proofreading.
