Probable culprit?
Jun 13, 2021
I am struggling with the same issue for many years by now. This problem sometimes disappears, then appears again. Maybe it is caused by some background process, like indexing, virus check, a Troyan (crypto mining malware) eating our RAM?
BTW, I now have 8 GB of RAM, but I have used memoQ with 4 GB of RAM without this issue for many years.

Maybe you can try some cloud-based CAT tools like memsource or XTM??
Are you serious? There is no way an online/cloud platform can possibly be better than one installed locally. This is a software bug, and my intent was to see if other people have the same trouble, because Kilgray doesn't admit it. The idea is to solve the issue, because MemoQ is an excellent software, and this bug should be resolved. But if the manufacturers don't admit it, there will be no solution.

I've always found MemoQ slower and more sluggish in pretty much everything it does compared to Trados. In fact, the ONLY thing that makes me cling to MemoQ really is the wonderfully easy find&replace workflow which is crucial with MT's. So the RAM hogging doesn't surprise me.
How did this problem end up, by the way?
Unfortunately, the issue was never solved. I doubled my RAM, and now, instead of using 6 GB, MemoQ uses 11 GB. But since it doesn't seem to be a general issue, Kilgray is not interested in my case. I guess I'll only sort this out when I change my computer to a different one.
Regarding Trados, it's really a matter of choice. I find it exactly the opposite of what you said. I tried Trados before MemoQ, and I chose MemoQ. There's no chance I'd switch to Trados. And you may not have noticed this yet, but users are generally switching from Trados do MemoQ all over, above all agencies that use the online/cloud versions, as MemoQ's cloud is infinitely better than Trados's.
