SEASONAL BASE
Base products should be checked at different times of the year to make sure that they are still the most suitable shades. For example, in the summer time, when the skin may have a tan, the shades of base product that you wear normally are unlikely to be appropriate. Similarly in winter, when the skin is paler, and the natural light more dull, you may need base products that are lighter in colour and that have light-reflecting properties.
The texture of base products may also need to change seasonally. In the summer, a lighter textured base may be more comfortable and in the winter, a more moisturising base may help skin that is dried out by harsh weather conditions and central heating.

Enhancing the Eyes
You will be utilizing shading and highlighting techniques again. Remember, shading or using darker colours will make areas recede and appear less noticeable; highlighting will make areas really stand out.
Small Eyes
1. Apply a light shade to the eyelid.
2. Apply a medium shade through the crease.
3. Add a darker shade to the outer corners.
Close Set Eyes
1. Apply a light shade to the eyelid near the bridge of the nose.
2. Apply a darker shade to the outer corners, blending upwards and outwards.
3. Highlight the brow bone.
Prominent Eyes
1. Apply a dark shade to the eyelid, taking it upwards and outwards towards the brow bone.
2. Apply a highlighter shade just below the brow bone.
Deep Set Eyes
1. Apply a light shade from lash line to brow.
2. Apply a medium shade just above the natural crease.
3. Highlight the brow bone.
Wide Set Eyes
1. Apply a light to medium base shade across the eyelid, blending from lash line to brow.
2. Apply a darker shade to the eyelid, near the bridge of the nose and blend softly outwards. Do not blend across the whole eyelid.
Mature Eyes (Drooping under the brow bone)
1. Apply a light or medium shade to the eyelid, blending from the lash line towards the brow bone.
2. Apply a darker shade to the outer half of the eyelid, just above the crease, and blend towards the brow bone.
Asian Shaped Eyes
1. Start by applying a medium shade across the lid and taking the colour to halfway between the lash line and the brow. Avoid too much colour on the inner corner.
2. Concentrate the colour from the centre of the eyelid and widening towards the outer corner.
3. Add a touch of highlighter to the inner corner of the eye.
4. Add a dark shade all along the upper lash line from the inner corner to the outer corner, extending slightly beyond the lash line (eyeliner works well for this).
5. Add the dark shade to the lower lash line, concentrating on the outer corner.

Je moet elk seizoen even kijken naar de basisproducten die je gebruikt. Gebruik je de goede kleur voor dit seizoen? In de zomer bijvoorbeeld, wanneer je een kleurtje hebt, zijn de tinten die je normaal gebruikt, waarschijnlijk niet de juiste. En in de winter, wanneer je huid lichter is, en het licht minder fel, heb je waarschijnlijk basisproducten nodig die lichter van kleur zijn en een lichtverstrooiend effect hebben, waardoor je huid een zachte gloed krijgt.
De textuur van de producten kan ook veranderen met het seizoen. In de zomer voelt een lichte basis prettiger aan, terwijl in de winter een vochtregulerende basis kan helpen je huid te beschermen tegen de veeleisende weersomstandigheden en het uitdrogende effect van centrale verwarming.

De ogen accentueren
Ook hier breng je schaduw en highlights aan. Onthoud dat een schaduw of donkere kleur verdoezelt en camoufleert, terwijl highlights bepaalde trekken juist accentueren.
Smalle ogen
1. Breng op het ooglid een lichte kleur oogschaduw aan.
2. Breng een iets donkerder kleur aan in de plooi boven het ooglid.
3. Breng een donkere tint aan in de buitenste hoeken.
Ogen die dicht bij elkaar staan
1. Breng een lichte kleur oogschaduw aan in de binnenste hoek van het ooglid.
2. Breng een donkere kleur aan in de buitenste hoeken, en werk die naar boven en naar buiten toe uit.
3. Breng een highlight aan op de arcadeboog.
Grote ogen
1. Breng op het ooglid een donkere kleur oogschaduw aan, en werk die naar boven en naar buiten toe uit richting de wenkbrauwen.
2. Breng net onder de wenkbrauwen een lichtere tint of een highlight aan.
Diepliggende ogen
1. Breng van de wimperaanzet tot aan de wenkbrauwen een lichte kleur oogschaduw aan.
2. Breng net boven de ooglidplooi een iets donkerder kleur aan.
3. Breng een highlight aan op de arcadeboog.
Ogen die ver uit elkaar staan
1. Breng een lichte of medium kleur oogschaduw aan; werk daarbij van de wimperaanzet richting de wenkbrauwen.
2. Breng een donkere kleur oogschaduw aan in de binnenste hoek van het ooglid, en werk die naar buiten toe uit (maar niet helemaal tot aan de buitenste hoek).
Overhangende oogleden
1. Breng een lichte of medium kleur oogschaduw aan; werk daarbij van de wimperaanzet richting de wenkbrauwen.
2. Breng een donkere kleur aan in de buitenste hoek, net boven de ooglidplooi, en werk die uit richting de wenkbrauwen.
Aziatische of amandelvormige ogen
1. Begin met het aanbrengen van een medium kleur oogschaduw op het ooglid en werk de kleur uit tot halverwege de wimperaanzet en de wenkbrauw. Gebruik niet te veel kleur in de binnenste hoek.
2. Breng de meeste kleur aan op het midden van het ooglid en werk de kleur naar buiten toe steeds wijder uit.
3. Breng een subtiele highlight aan op de binnenste hoek van het ooglid.
4. Breng van binnen naar buiten een donkere schaduw aan langs de gehele wimperaanzet (bovenste wimpers) en trek de lijn naar buiten toe iets door (eyeliner is hier heel geschikt voor).
5. Breng ook langs de wimperaanzet van de onderste wimpers een donkere schaduw aan, waarbij je de nadruk legt op de buitenste ooghoek.

Our fourth day is a ride through Yellowstone Park. The Cycle Greater Yellowstone 2013 event will have a layover day when riders will take sightseeing buses through the park – the Park Service welcomes the event, but 1,000 riders on the particular road we’re using isn’t safe, because there are no shoulders. But a small private group of riders is allowed, so we make the ride. And it’s great; we see bison, moose, pronghorn antelope and more. And to think that the best is yet to come...
We overnight in the tiny town of Silver Gate, devouring both dinner and breakfast at the superlative Log Cabin Cafe. Across the street is The Range Rider, a former brothel that was one of the largest freestanding log buildings in the U.S. when it was built – second locally only to Old Faithful Lodge in Yellowstone. Rows of tiny bedrooms line the upper floors, each still marked with the name of a young lady who did business there.
We set off through wild forest, rolling up and down for miles before descending into the magical world of Sunlight Basin. This massive network of canyons extends far out of sight in several directions, with homestead ranches that spread out on a scale worthy of Big Sky Country. We drop down to a river crossing before starting up the first major climb of the week, over Chief Joseph Pass.
This is an epic climb, and the group starts to sort itself out as each rider finds his or her rhythm. It’s either good or bad that you can see the top of the pass from much of the climb; it shows you how far you’ve come and how far you have to go, which I kind of like. We zigzag up the switchbacks slowly but steadily, drinking in the expansive views. The view from the top is panoramic, and it’s one you could ponder for days. But a long descent (and lunch) awaits.

Op dag vier maken we een rit door Yellowstone National Park. Tijdens Cycle Greater Yellowstone 2013 is er een rustdag waarop de deelnemers per bus een tour door het park kunnen maken. De Park Service is blij met het evenement, maar duizend fietsers op de weg die wij gebruiken is niet verantwoord, want er zijn geen bermen. Een klein groepje mag wel, dus wij maken de tocht door het park per fiets. En dat is geweldig: we zien bizons, elanden, gaffelantilopen en nog veel meer moois. En dan te bedenken dat het mooiste nog moet komen...
We overnachten in het kleine plaatsje Silver Gate en dineren en ontbijten bij het ongeëvenaarde Log Cabin Cafe. Aan de overkant is The Range Rider, een voormalig bordeel dat ooit tot de grootste vrijstaande gebouwen in blokhutstijl van de VS behoorde – alleen de Old Faithful Lodge in Yellowstone was groter. Op de bovenverdiepingen vind je nog steeds rijen piepkleine slaapkamertjes, elk voorzien van de naam van de dame die er zaken deed.
We fietsen eerst door oerbossen, eindeloos klimmend en dalend voordat we afdalen in de magische wereld van Sunlight Basin. Dit uitgestrekte netwerk van canyons loopt in meerdere richtingen door tot buiten ons gezichtsveld, met enorme ranches die Montana's bijnaam, Big Sky Country, meer dan recht doen. We zakken af naar een rivier en steken over, waarna we aan de eerste grote klim van deze week beginnen, over de Chief Joseph Pass.
Dit is nou wat je noemt een heroïsche beklimming. De groep valt uit elkaar, terwijl iedereen zijn eigen ritme opzoekt. Niet iedere fietser vindt het prettig dat je de top van de bergpas tijdens een groot deel van de klim kunt zien: je weet hoe ver je al bent, maar ook hoe ver je nog moet. Maar ik vind het wel handig, zo'n oriëntatiepunt. We zigzaggen haarspeldbocht na haarspeldbocht langzaam maar zeker omhoog en genieten van de vergezichten. Het uitzicht vanaf de top is panoramisch en adembenemend; je weet niet waar je kijken moet. Maar een lange afdaling (en een lunch) wacht ons.
