Name of a piece of music by the composer Jacob Van Eyck - would like to know what it means please. Also titled 'Malle Symen' if that is of any help.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com (asker) Jun 23, 2004:
Thank you all for your very helpful answers to my query over the meaning of the title 'Malle Symen'. Yes, indeed, I agree that the title should not be translated. However, in order to play the piece in the manner intended by van Eyck it is verging on the imperative to know quite what the title means. I note the slight differences of opinion with regards to the nuances of the 'crazy' element. There is a tinge of pathos in the music, and the 'foolish character from the theater' does seem to emerge through that. Anyhow, my grateful thanks to everyone for your help. It has been invaluable!

Malsimmes / Malle Symen / 'Crazy Simon'

Since the piece is called "Malsimmes / Malle Symen" I wouldn't translate, but include 'Crazy Simon' as explanation, e.g.

"Malle Symen Quartet
Director : none
Year ensemble formed : 1994
Description : "Malle Symen" is a well-known tune from the 17th century. Quite a few composers (e.g. Sweelinck) used this tune as a base for their compositions. It is possible, that "Malle Symen" was also used as a term for a foolish character from the theater. "Malle" means 'crazy' while "Symen" is a version of the name 'Simon'. "

Thanks!
disagree shineda : 'crazy' seems too harsh for 'malle'. it's more like 'funny' or may be 'foolish'

Perhaps you should read the references first before commenting - that is the 'correct' name for this piece of music!
