specified workload tasks Uitleg: And for 'niet-genormeerde taken': unspecified workload tasks. Under this policy, each academic staff member is allocated a total annual workload of 35 Workload Points. This workload includes specified workload tasks, such as teaching and administrative duties as well as unspecified workload tasks such as research, professional activities and staff development. For most academic staff the 35 workload points will be made up as follows: 24 points for teaching and administrative duties (as specified below) 8 points for research or professional activities 3 points for staff development Heads of School have discretion under this policy to vary the proportion of the annual workload allocated to teaching, administration, research, professional activities and staff development for individual academic staff. (...) Workload Allocation for Specified Workload Tasks The following table shows the workload points for specified teaching and administrative workload tasks. http://www.peqab.ca/Archive/CSUBPrimaryEdWeb.pdf -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 days (2017-03-21 13:05:23 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- II.

weighted units Uitleg: I'm more inclined to think this has to do with the math involved in balancing out the faculty workload relative to the FTE allocation in the taakbeleid. In other words, "genormeerd" (to me) means "weighted". By extension, "niet-genormeerd" would mean "unweighted". By units, I mean "teaching units" (if it concerns instruction). If it concerns anything else like non-instructional responsibilities (e.g. research, grant writing, office hours, advising, producing white papers / publications), we call it "assigned time". Some places call it TLCs (teaching load credits), others may call it WTUs (weighted teaching units), but "weighted units" is equally understood as the same thing. "Taken", therefore, can also be translated as "credits" or (more accurately) "assignments" (as in the course/task/activity the dean assigns to a particular faculty member to teach/lead/do for a given semester or academic year). Units are weighted by what are called "K-factors", which are solely determined by the academic institution relative to the FTE allocation and what the "taakbeleid" specifies as full time. For many universities here, it's anywhere from 24 to 30 credits per academic year for a full professor or full time professor (12 to 15 per semester). For example: If they have teaching units with a K factor of 0 (e.g. recitation classes, lab classes, etc), chances are, it's going to be passed off to a graduate teaching assistant because the faculty member won't get credit for that time, nor will they be evaluated on those units either, so that allows them to use "assigned time" to make up for those hours that they aren't in contact with students. When the K-factor is 1, it's considered an unweighted teaching unit. Anything above or below 1 is considered weighted, so as to balance out the time load for each faculty member. Assigned time + weighted & unweighted teaching units should give each faculty member a group of percentages that add up to 100% if they are full time. Overload is considered at above 100% and part-time is considered at 50% or less. To explain further: Credit hours are supposed to determine how many hours a week you normally might be in class (student contact hours). For a 3 credit hour course, you might meet MWF for 50 minute classes, or Tues/Thurs for 1.5 hrs each or just 1 day a week for 3 hours. Those classes might have a K-factor of 1 => unweighted teaching unit (the time you spend in class is the credit you get). If the class is particularly difficult or requires more time than usual, the K-factor may be higher simply to accommodate for the time investment (e.g. grading papers, lesson planning, curriculum development, long rehearsal hours etc). For example: Marching band at my alma mater is given 1 credit hour, but we met 2 hours a day, 3 times a week, plus game days. That normally would mean a 6 to 10 hour time load. That would heavily distort overall GPAs for the student if 6 to 10 credit hours were given, since the grades are largely determined based on attendance, attitude and participation rather than "performance" merit. So, the K factor is higher for the time investment, but not too high due to comparatively low academic effort. If the K factor was 3, it would mean that even though the student gets 1 credit hour, the faculty member is treated as having had 3 hours of student contact. So, the "normering" or "weighting" by the K-factor, in essence, "normalizes" the values across the board so as to realistically balance the task load (taakbelasting) and the time load for each faculty member. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2017-03-16 19:21:00 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I think in English this could be workload (guidelines) or apportionment. http://cehs.unl.edu/documents/cehs/faculty/FacultyWorkloadGu... https://sites.udel.edu/provost/files/2015/01/ACCT-Workload-1... |
