Yet there is an overwhelming number of those, including professionals, who demonstrate little, if any, resistance to doing unpaid test translations. Regardless of how the industry refers to them or tries to convince the all-too-amenable translator of their importance to quality management purposes or invitation to a tender, they're still translations, and being so, they require time and effort. [Edited at 2018-08-12 21:43 GMT] Usually, it's only for short one off jobs between 1000 and 2000 words. Once you've taken the test, done the paperwork, you've cut your rate by half. Without any warranty that the next time, the company won't "try" another translator or submit yet another test! After all, there really should be one test for each job! ..
