I can’t understand this question! I’m only hired when a particular client sends me a job, not before. Anyway, if I am contacted by a potential client but a job offer never materializes, I simply leave it alone, I know from experience that in x% of the cases my rates scared him/her off…

Begging for work puts you in a weak position.

How can you be "hired" without being given anything to do?

Is that some new meaning for "hired"?

Being included in an agency database is hardly "being hired".

What Maria Teresa said. A company hasn't "hired" me until it's offered me a job, and I've accepted.

I wouldn’t either, but it isn’t really begging and you’re in an even weaker position if they don’t send you anything…

I don’t see that it would do any harm to try and fill a gap when you haven’t got any work on.

It's not begging, it's marketing.

Get in touch when you have an update to tell them about, it will remind them that you exist and let them know that you are available for work.

I sit anxiously by the phone, all day, worrying myself sick, waiting for that call. At night I toss and turn, unable to sleep.

Hello folks,

Well, I would say it depends... Why did they "hire" you in the first place? Is it just for one job or did they register you in their database?

I usually don't expect much from somebody that contacts me. If we agree on something and the task is done, that's it. I don't consider them coming back all the time... Hello folks,

Well, I would say it depends... Why did they "hire" you in the first place? Is it just for one job or did they register you in their database?

I usually don't expect much from somebody that contacts me. If we agree on something and the task is done, that's it. I don't consider them coming back all the time... In the end, and this is my experience, translation work is project-specific. You don't know if that agency/company will need your language pair in future or if there is more work...

In fact, I was just contacted by an agency this week that registered me like 1.5 years ago. I never heard back from them until some days ago. Or there are companies that send you tiny tasks for over one year and then come back with a major job... I had all of this before. You don't know what they think, why they do it, and I honestly don't really care. ^^

On the other hand, if you expect more work from them, just ask them. Questioning things doesn't cost you anything.

I didn't use to follow up ... Feb 3

... but have changed my strategy since last fall. With companies where I'm registered but not receiving any work, I'll typically wait longer than one month, except for when they said there was something in the pipeline during the onboarding procedure.

Hired me? Feb 3

If someone “hires” me, then there will be work, and I will be receiving a salary.

What they did is onboarded you, not hired you (a huge difference).

I don’t do onboarding any longer, because it never turns into any work and only wastes my precious time which I could put to use somewhere else.

Nameless/faceless/dateless articles are worse than buzz words.

I always aim for a date to see how relevant an article is, and name, oh well, even pets have them? Why not pieces of writing?

The author says “in my opinion”, whose opinion? Who are they?

I scrolled several times and failed to find the name. Apologies if it’s there, and I just could not find it.

I like onboarding Feb 3

Onboarding/offboarding is a great word. Can’t believe someone is discussing this, and I continue discussing it with them, straying completely offtopic.
