Here, I used to invited to various get-togethers via the alumni association of the translation school I graduated from, and the French translators' association. I went along a couple of times in the Before Times. However I have since let my membership to both lapse, so I don't even know whether they still organise them. | | | neilmac Spanje Local time: 06:12 Spaans naar Engels + ...
Yes there is, but nowadays I'm usually too busy with other things to actively engage in things like conferences, powwows, etc. | | | Lieven Malaise België Local time: 06:12 Lid 2020 Frans naar Nederlands + ... Not that I know of. | Oct 5, 2022 |
Translators are generally loners (professionally spoken). So am I. I don't feel any need to become part of any real-life linguist community whatsoever. My spare time is precious.

I’m no longer the social being I once was and I love working and living alone (I happen to have my youngest daughter with me since November last year until the repair works in her apartment are completed). Anyway, I am in frequent contact with some Proz members and with my ex-colleagues in Brussels but we don’t make a community… | | | expressisverbis Portugal Local time: 05:12 Lid 2015 Engels naar Portugees + ...
I live in a city located a bit over 13 km from Porto’s city centre.
I'm surrounded by beautiful mountain chains, a river, leafy trees, and fresh air, so I doubt that there is any.

I have never made any attempt to be part of a "translator community" or anything like that. There is only one fellow translator among my friends, but I knew him a long time before we became translators. Other than that, I'm more than happy to spend my leisure time without talking business | | | Michael Newton Verenigde Staten Local time: 00:12 Japans naar Engels + ... I live in a small town adjacent to Boston. Taking the tram to my favorite Starbucks, I can hear Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Japanese, Turkish, Greek, Chinese, Italian, Korean and the like. I am frequently asked for directions. The second language of the town is Russian, then Hebrew, then Chinese. One cannot help but eavesdrop on the multi-lingual conversations surrounding me. The second language of the town is Russian, then Hebrew, then Chinese. One cannot help but eavesdrop on the multi-lingual conversations surrounding me. My local bookstore now stocks books in five languages with Japanese a recent addition. The problem is that a number of the works in Japanese have Volume I and Volume II but Volume is often left out. I speak Japanese at home all day and in the evening when work is done, I go to Netflix for the latest K-drama or telenovela from Spain or Mexico. I also buy Russian and Japanese newspapers from the local Russian and Japanese delis. We have one Chinese radio station, one in Korean, two in Portuguese and four in Spanish. There are local Greek pastry shops and a Greek taverna where I can brush up on Greek (besides the weekly liturgy in Greek as I am Greek Orthodox). And whenever I get a chance, I speak English. ▲ Collapse
