I'm a relative newcomer to Trados (I've been using MemoQ) and was wondering if there are any plans to simplify the alignment process in Trados and integrate it properly into Studio 2009.

This is such a vital feature and, as things stand, I find that Trados makes the whole process far too unwieldy and time-consuming, especially as you have to go through the 2007 version of the software and fiddle around with the output files.

This is such a vital feature and, as things stand, I find that Trados makes the whole process far too unwieldy and time-consuming, especially as you have to go through the 2007 version of the software and fiddle around with the output files.

In MemoQ, the process is extremely straightforward and takes two minutes - you just select two files and they're instantly aligned. So you can easily re-use your existing translations, which is the main point of buying these TM applications in the first place.

Are Trados making this feature a priority? If not, they really should be!

Otherwise, I think the latest version of Trados is quite good.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Your are absolutely right. Studio 2009 needs to have its own feature to align translations, but since it is not really a stand-alone tool (but rather an upgrade of 2007), you have to use the 'legacy' one.

After 3 Service Packs the guys at SDL have their hands full trying to make the software stable and workable, and an aligning tool is obviously not among their priorities.

This is a vital component of the CAT process! How can SDL simply shove it aside?

Especially when taking on a new customer, it can be useful to "feed" Trados with existing translations for which no TMs, bilingual docs, or other suitable files exist.

I for one would be grateful if I didn't have to use the utility from 2007!

A very powerful tool Apr 1, 2011

I used to think that either SDL underestimated the value of this feature or it was very difficult to create a programme that could easily extract and match all those useful translation units - or a combination of the two.

But now that Google translate is becoming increasingly powerful, and Google themselves explain that that is how it works (crunching up existing translations) you cannot help hatching a few conspiracy theories...
