Hello all,

I was wondering, are we expecting SDL Trados 2011?

When 2007 and 2009 came out, was there any advance warning or was it just a big surprise for the market?

Let me know!

Alain

Never believed I would ever be writing this. I can see the guys from SDL Support shake their head in disbelief already.

Enjoy your holidays, everyone!

If SDL made cars... Dec 23, 2010

Imagine that you want to buy a car. You come to a dealership, and the following conversation ensues:

- I've had this model since 2004 and liked it. However, it's getting a little old, so I'd like to buy a new one.
- Sure, in the 2009 model year we have a new streamlined body, and your car comes in a kit: a car, a boat and a helicopter, all in coordinated colors, and one ignition key fits all the three!
- No need for these, I'll just get a car...

- No need for these, I'll just get a car...
- Sorry, it's either the whole kit or nothing.
- Oh well, I guess I don't have an option...

So, you grudgingly buy the kit. A week later, you come to the dealer again:

- I have some custom maps loaded in the navigation system of my old car. I wanted to copy them to the new one, but it says the format isn't supported...
- Oh, this is simple: all you need is a 2007 model year. You copy your files from your 2004 to the 2007, then you connect the 2007 to the 2009 with a special cable, and your maps get converted and uploaded.

Kafkaesque, isn't it?

You really wanna risk it? Dec 23, 2010

It has taken SDL over a year to make a "reasonably reliable" version with no actual enhancement of the product other than fixing things.... and now you want to risk it with a new version?

A new version? The mere thought is really scary.

Please, have mercy, do not give SDL ideas.

Let's give the company another couple of years to work on the product so users do not feel like paying beta testers.

Keeping a close eye on developments at SDL Dec 23, 2010

Good point, Tomás. In fact I don't. I just know from the past that the yearly upgrades were minor adaptations to Trados, usually more like Service Packs with an added feature here or there. If that's what Studio 2011 is going to be (which might not come at all) then I'd like to stay up to date. A major change would not be good, but I'm not expecting that.

I do want full compatibility with whatever file format and version of Microsoft, Adobe and other products there is on the market. I hope SDL has learned its lessons and implements these compatibilities ahead of time, instead of half a year too late, like they used to.

Cashflow Dec 23, 2010

The reason why software firms (SDL is partly a software firm) release new versions is not to give us a fantastic product but to make us pay again some money, so they can pay salaries.

If they would deliver a software which solves all problems and has no bugs they would go bankrupt after the market is once satisfied.

Or new versions/products could add more value, justifying the costs. Hopefully the latter will be the case!

Personally, I think SDL would have to come up with some great new features in a stable program in order to justify a new version this early after the release of TS09. Although I like the new interface of TS09 and profit from the benefits of some of its features (e.g. AutoSuggest), the market is very slow to make the switch from earlier versions. From a marketing standpoint, it would be hard to sell SDL Trados 2011 when major fixes were just recently released for TS09 and there are some still pending.

I have a slim hope of being to do Trados work in the coming Deja Vu X2.

Too many replies, no answer? Dec 24, 2010

I usually wonder, how far can a thread be hijacked. So, to answer the original questions:

1. AFAIK, there will be SDL Trados Studio 2011. The change will not be as revolutionary as the change from T2007 to T2009, but I expect some new features and improvements.

2. The release of SDL Trados Studio 2009 was announced about three months in advance, if I can remember well.

I expect the new version to arrive in the third quarter of 2011. Remember that these are

This was a failed attempt at a joke. SDL Studio is as unreliable as ever. Sorry if I led someone astray here.

I doubt it, Dec 27, 2010

but if they do bring out a new version, I hope there will be an affordable option that allows me to run my TM from a database/server.

My TM is becoming too big for file-based processing.

From what I've seen, it's had stability/reliability since the first service patch.
What I want is a version with things that shouuld have been there from the beginning. I'm thinking things like:
- Zoom feature for Editor
- Save Target as TTX without the song and dance of having to create TTXs first (and consequently losing that nice real-time preview feature)
- AutoSuggest that doesn't ignore hits in my termbases just because the case doesn't match
- Search and Replace box that stays on top

SDL Studio wish list Dec 28, 2010

Oh, don't get me started:

- it should allow collaboration with people who have other CAT tools
- it should allow collaboration by exchanging TMs, glossaries and bilingual files. (Studio seems specifically designed to prevent these things, unless you buy the 3000 euro version)
- it should show me useful, reliable „Fuzzy Matches“ (Studio is worse than Trados - useless)
- quick and easy to learn, for everyone in the process (that's a pet peeve of mine)

- designed with the translator in mind (not the LSP, like Studio)
- good terminology tool, with additional, project-related term banks
- clear, simple structure
- source and target below one another, like in TagEditor
- clear, useable system for showing how source differs from „match“
- possibility to edit source text (separate and merge doesn't even work most of the time)
- Tags should be tentatively placed in the target text, to be confirmed or altered
- Segmentation is a joke. Why on earth do short sentences have to be split in the middle and entire paragraphs allowed as one segment?
- TMs that can be used in both Trados 2007 and Studio (now I have to manually keep both up-to-date)

and the list goes on and on and on and....

Banging heads against reinforced concrete walls Dec 29, 2010

Just as an aside, I don't get the tenor of the posts in this thread.

Like Tomás, I swapped horses and went for another TEnT when Studio 2009 was announced and, since then, it has been "Farewell to SDL Trados products."

I won't judge Studio's performances as I never used it, but apparently its benefits outweigh its shortcomings - or am I missing something?

My current TEnT froze maybe 2 times since I bought it, its learning curve is smooth as the tool works in a logical way, the formats it uses are LISA standards, it can create multilingual and multidirectional translation memories, it runs on all platforms without any kind of virtual machine.

Its current price? EUR 240.

Banging heads against reinforced concrete walls is not a valid option anymore IMHO.
