As a former university lecturer and Ph.D. in comparative languages and literatures, I have years of experience translating from Spanish and Hebrew to English, and vice versa.
My academic background is where I became fanatic about turn of phrase and nuance, as the elements which make or break a good text. Having lived many years in Israel and Argentina, I have seen (and read) the difference between living languages and seeing them as lifeless tools. Conveying meaning in a target text requires more than just looking up words in a dictionary. I guarantee my clients an effective final product which addresses the target audience in their own language, on their own terms.
Since going freelance I have translated extensively, but not exclusively, in social science related areas; politics, human rights and international relations, as well as sociology, philosophy and historical texts. I have done extensive work as well on documents related to the arts- music, theatre, and literature, as well as numerous academic texts in fields including ethics and social policy.
My projects in the past have included the following range of subjects, among others:
-Editing for a Hebrew children's book aimed at teaching a second language to children.
-Extensive proofreading and editing of Spanish-English academic articles on the history of bibliophilia.
-Translation of a series of conference papers on abuse of the elderly.
-Translation of materials for courses on Judeo-Spanish history and poetry -Numerous academic papers and articles including PhD dissertations on subjects ranging from human rights in Latin America to literary criticism to international development and intertextuality -Translation of science fiction short stories by the winner of the Israeli Geffen Prize.
-Translation and editing of grant applications for the Bronfman Prize
-Translation and extensive editing of a series of international development grant proposals for the World Bank.
-Translation of political science academic articles on the philosopher Habermas and his view of citizenship.
-Translation of brochures and exhibit descriptions for art galleries and museums in 4 countries.
I am a member of the ATA and the Israeli Translator's Association and I am accredited as an interpreter and translator from Hebrew and Spanish at the Immigration and Refugee Board for the government of Canada.
I live in Israel, however the bulk of my work is for clients in other time zones. This is not a problem, and I am used to working with the differences in hours.
