Description The American Translators Association (ATA) is the largest professional association of translators and interpreters in the United States. The association has 10,000 members. Membership is available to both individuals and organizations. Members are primarily translators, interpreters and language company owners, but there are also project managers and other professionals.

Among the services offered by the ATA are:
  • Events and Annual Conference. The ATA annual conference is held every fall in a major city in the U.S., and is one of the largest translation-related conferences in the world. The meeting includes workshops, 170-plus educational sessions, exhibitors, a job fair, and networking events.
  • Certification. ATA offers a certification exam to translators in thirty language pairs. Becoming ATA certified allows translators to document their abilities objectively in a specific language combination.
  • Professional Development. The ATA organizes webinars and seminars.
  • Honors and Awards. ATA presents several awards and scholarships during its Annual Conference.
  • Divisions. Through 22 specialty-specific divisions, ATA provides a way for members with common interests to network more effectively. The divisions offer specialized information, blogs, newsletters, online forums, seminar and conference presentations, and networking sessions.
  • Local Groups. ATA chapters and affiliates provide regional information, marketing, networking, and support services to local translators and interpreters.
  • Client Education. The Association has developed publications, reports, and surveys to educate customers of translation and interpreting services about the value of using professional translators and interpreters. ATA is a member of the Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs (FIT). There is a Wikipedia article on ATA.

The ATA certification program was implemented in 1973. More than 2,000 ATA members are currently certified, many in more than one language pair. A testament to a translator's professional competence to translate from one specific language to another, certification is awarded after a candidate passes an open-book examination administered under controlled conditions.

It is possible to be a member of ATA without being certified. (Most of ATA's 10,000 members are not certified.)
