German term

Rechnung aufmachen

German to English Bus/Financial Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
So eine Rechnung macht natürlich niemand auf, aber sie zeigt, dass die Diskussion im Grunde genommen in die falsche Richtung geht.

This refers to investing in special equipment to save costs in the long run.

to think in such terms

as Kim has already indicated - without context, this is very tricky.

Maybe also suitable (depending on context): to take into account
Peer comment(s):

do this kind of accounting/account for it in this way/look at the pros and cons in this way

her's my stab at it:
"of course, nobody would [normally] do this kind of accounting, but it shows that the whole discussion (is based on false premises/is going in the wrong direction - or whatever you want to use for the second part).
