I have the feeling we would call both of these "nursing homes". Eurodicautom gives "care home" for "verzorgingshuis" but I've never heard that used. Is there any difference between them?

nursing homes and sheltered housing
You could also use the term "convalescent home" . Sheltered housing is frequently associated with retirement homes caring for the elderly. Sheltered housing offers meals as necessary and other assistance. Convalescent homes offer post hospital care when a return home is not possible.

I'd go for care homes. In a care home, you'll have your own "flat" (a sitting room and a bedroom, a tiny kitchen and a bathroom), while in a nursing home you'll have to share a room with 3 to 5 other patients. In a nursing home are patients, in a care home there are residents. Huge difference!
