OED:
pedometer, n.
1. An instrument for estimating the distance travelled on foot by registering the number of steps taken.
Thank you. Although used for the same purpose (i.e. land-surveying, measuring distances), this instrument does not have the same design as "sáhoměr" which is an A-shaped instrument similar to a "divider" or "compass"... |
fathom meter/measuring device
Děkuji, ale tento výraz nelze dohledat, a zřejmě ani "fathom" není jednotka odpovídající onomu (zřejmě vídeňskému) sáhu. |
Surveyor's wheel

That's exact description of the same device in English

Here's the definition: http://www.directlinesoftware.com/survey.htm
A Frame - A measuring device built in the shape of an A. The distance between the legs is 6.6 feet (one tenth of a chain. To measure the acreage of a small square parcel, multiply the width and height in "A's" and move the decimal point three places to the left. For example, a square that is 6 A's wide and 4 A's tall is .024 acres.
Basically that's so-called "proportional divider", but bigger in size - A-shaped. Unfortunately that has nothing to do with wheels.
Thank you for all your suggestions but A-frame, although very close to sáhoměr in its design was not used the same way or for the same purpose as sáhoměr. |
(Hauptner) landsurveyor('s) compass
The idea is that you lock the legs at a set distance (in this case either 1 m or 2 m). By simply rotating the compass while walking, a distance can be measured. The instrument seems to have been in use for setting out agricultural fields as well as (rough
Discussion
1. Yes, it's true that the English examples of using this simple tool that are given as illustrations show it being put to a different purpose.
2. But his Czech links do fit the bill, where it is being used to measure the distances.
3. Finally, the actual measurement unit. The definition in http://www.directlinesoftware.com/survey.htm states that the measurement unit of A frame is 6.6 feet = 202 cm. It's not far from the Czech sáh, which is 179 cm.
After all, before the middle of 19th C there weren't any international standards, so each country (and parts thereof) used their own units.
It's unlikely you will get a more fitting answer here.
What you may have to do here is to supply a translator's note saying that here the A frame is used as a simple tool to measure distance (in surveying).
