About an Argentine artist/critic:
Acompañar –para luego consolidar– el proceso de renovación de los lenguajes plásticos, aportando herramientas de lectura y comprensión a un público que entendía como fruidor pero, también, como potencial comprador de obras de arte.
is it the same as viewer (espectador)?
Thanks

appreciators
I think "fruir" really means to appreciate, and I think that it in English it is more natural to make it plural, rather than treating "el público" as a single entity. "Appreciators and potential buyers".
"Boston Visual Art Appreciators
If you enjoy contemporary ("art of today") visual art from established and emerging professional artists and are seeking other people with whom to visit museums and galleries, this is the Meetup for you."

Here is an interesting comment on the difference between "fruidor" and "espectador":

: I think this is the closest you are going to get if you stick with a noun. For a more natural result it would probably best to change the phrase and use a verb as Phil suggests.

Thanks, Gilla :) I wavered over the verb solution, and it would certainly make this "fruidor" bit read better. I'm more doubtful about "potentially buying", but it's probably OK.

art lovers
I read this as saying that art lovers can also be regarded as potential art buyers .

or "lovers" as Jenni says. The original meaning of the word, still unambiguous when applied to art reception.

aficionados
In this context, "un público fruidor" can mean viewers, but also implies people who enjoy and appreciate art. "Aficionado" is the closest noun I can think of that conveys appreciation and enjoyment.
