Microsoft support fixed the problem!!!! Jun 1, 2004

Hi everyone!

First thanks to you all for your help - it was greatly appreciated. I finally bit the bullet and contacted Microsoft's Internet support, and after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, this is the solution that we found (some bits are in German as I use German software):

1. Quit all programs

2. Go to Start > (Einstellungen >) Systemsteuerung > Software

3. Click on "Microsoft Office 2000" and choose Ändern...

4. Select "Feature... See more

5. In the tree Microsoft Office > Office Tools > ...
set *all* relevant Korrekturhilfen to "nicht verfügbar" (by clicking on the symbol in front of the entry)

6. Click "Jetzt aktualisieren"

7. Proceed with No. 2.; instead of No. 5. do the following
In the tree Microsoft Office > Office Tools > ...
set *all* relevant Korrekturhilfen to "alles vom Arbeitsplatz starten" (by clicking on the symbol in front of the entry)

8. Click "Jetzt aktualisieren"

9. Recheck the behavior of the spellchecker.


Now everything works just fine.

So if anyone has this problem in future, they might find that this solution helps.
