Oh dear... but I think they are pretty complete now, aren't they? I don't see any reason to acquire any of the other companies unless any of them invents some tricky tool that allows translators to turn off their brain while translating...

Wasn't the SDL - TRADOS merger exactly this kind of big-eats-bigger deal? The hungry / losing party desperate to get at the cash flow and the balance sheet be damned?
With US printing 1,05 billion $ per day 24/7/365, money should be no problem...

Well, in the past years, translators could make use of a light version of SDLX just for editing purposes for free, and so they currently can for Passolo and some other TM tool. In addition, I remember that I got the Trados freelance edition upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5 version for free, plus a new Multiterm edition as a premium.

Microsoft became a Trados shareholder.... and suddenly, from then on, any minimum upgrade was to be paid at a high cost (with respect to the simple software technology of this kind of software) by any freelancer. Example: from 6.0 to 6.5 or from 7.0 to 7.5 with SDLX as a premium.
Currently, the Passolo situation is the same as it was for SDLX light version. We can edit localizations without buying the complete software suite, so that we can provide localizations to customers who need their localizations to be done with that software without purchasing the full Passolo suite.
I wonder if in a few months we will have to buy an "SDL Passolo Trados 2008 freelance edition" and pay even more for upgrading once a month.
I think that freelance localizers/translators are becoming the most important targets for such products. There is an increasing number of them out there and they have to buy such products and upgrade them at an increasing pace, sometimes just to provide discounts to their agency customers or just to be able to work for new agency customers.
Does anyone know if Microsoft is still involved in these products as a shareholder? ▲ Collapse

It wasn't a merger, it was a takeover. The only "merger" was/is the software. Purely a strategic move by a company that still makes more greenbacks from selling services like Lionbridge does, than it does by selling software to the likes of us. Yes - the U.S. Treasury does that, not LB. Take another luck at the figures I mentioned in the first URL in my earlier posting.

I think not. Remember that we also advertise their product on our community page, albeit at more user-friendly prices. Still, they could perhaps stretch a bit further and publicly offer us discounts on their website, like these guys do: http://www.alchemysoftware.ie/products/proz_offer1.html
It seems that our community is not interested in forcing "vendor lockin" among its members, as the Alchemy package clearly suggests.
Remember that revenue from advertising means that it can be invested in ongoing service improvement in our backyard, while also giving us the pecuniary benefit. I look forward to more special deals as our size and negotiating power increases. Getting a break on secondary applications that we need (e.g. Acrobat, Abby, Dragon) would be cool.
Nevertheless, one wonders whether it would be worthwhile/possible to change the incorporation of Proz to something like a foundation or whatever, so that it would be invulnerable against hostile attacks?

I do think there is a difference between offering a price reduction for members of a community and offering the membership to a community on one's own product page. In the case of the former it is clear that the community benefits from being a large group of people with the same interest. I don't see that in the case of the latter. What benefit does SDL get from offering Proz.com membership on their pages? I also fail to see how effective this kind of advertising can be for Proz.com, or the community...

Do you really think that this in the interest of Proz.com as a venue? I think that most people who successfully built and maintained their dot com-venue were striving to sell it for a lot more money than they have put into building it. I don't say that is what Henry is aiming at but he may have plans of his own, and they may not necessarily match those of the community.

I don't think so, since these are all valid questions.
Going back to my earlier point, I think that the anti-trust argument would be good enough to maintain Proz independence.

Absolutely my opinion, but MomoQ did indeed develop very nicely and has now some features that I miss in my loved DVX. So please, SDL, do not spoil or corrupt neither DVX nor DemoQ.
