I suppose the easiest way would be with Flash itself.
You can download the trial version here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/
I've used the program in the past and it's not really very complicated. | | |
Is it a .fla, or a .swf?
If a .fla, you can use Flash software and edit it directly.
If a .swf, use a decompiler to convert it into .fla, and edit in Flash.
When you use a decompiler (e.g. Trillix) you get the file broken down to text, audio and video elements. You can translate the text elements with Trados and then use Flash to redo the .fla.
Quite a lot of work there, but it can be done.

No, a swf is a kind of comprimed file like a jpeg, mp3, etc.
You can not get the original FLA from the SWF. Impossible.
You can only "fish" out some parts of the Fla movie with a decompiler. For translations is not a reasonable procedure.
If the SWf (what you see in a site) is good made. The creator of the movie (FLA) has the text parts as XML files so they can easily change if needed, just refreshing the modified XMLs in the library for this movie.
Ask for this files.
If the text inside the movie is vectorized, forget about it.
Flash is not so easy!

Usually, elearning material companies send a script to the translator, and after that, send the translated script to a Flash guy.
The text in a Flash elearning material can be static or dynamic.
Static is more like Powepoint slides, where you could just overwrite the source text. If so, you'd need Flash to enter the translation. Make sure to ask the version the client wants.

What format do you have to deliver?
For example, we deliver translated, tested and ready to upload elearning courses for some clients, while others just request translated FLA, or translated XML, or just the translated script, and others just ask us to flow a translation done by somebody else.
I almost forgot. Maybe you'd also need to translate ancillary files or a loader, which can be tricky if you are not familiar with Action script.
Once again, it depends on how the course has been set.
If you want to use a CAT tool, get the script from the client.
