Do you fill in all segments? De persoon die dit onderwerp heeft geplaatst: Heinrich Pesch

I use CAT since 2002 and always left segments untranslated that would be identical in the target (numbers, names of persons, titles of books etc.). Today a PM insisted on filling these too, otherwise the translation would be incomplete. | | | No target file with empty segments | May 27, 2015 |
In many CATs you just can't leave empty segments in the target, else no deliverable can be produced. I hope you get paid for processing all segments though. | | | Erik Freitag Duitsland Local time: 05:03 Lid 2006 Nederlands naar Duits + ...
Of course I do, and I agree 100% with your PM. I'm wondering why none of your clients has complained about that before. How should your client know that you didn't just forget a particular segment? If a segment is identical in the target text, I copy it. If the translation of a segment is "blank space" in the target language (which does happen, at least in my language combination), I leave the target segment blank and set the segment status to "translated". ... [Bearbeitet am 2015-05-27 12:44 GMT] The bilingual file is only an intermediate. In the final translation all segments will be there, and I have used lots of different software, like SDL Studio, WFP, Transit. Copying numbers will fill the TM with useless stuff: "Oh, my TM has one hundred thousand segments, ninety thousand of them are numbers". When you fill in those pseudo-translated segments the software will count them as translated and you will invoice for work you did not do. With WFC I usually invoice according to the report after clean-up, which shows the number of translated words and characters.

Numbers may need to be localized | May 27, 2015 |
For example, in Russian we would write 1,234,567.89 as 1 234 567,89 | | | Erik Freitag Duitsland Local time: 05:03 Lid 2006 Nederlands naar Duits + ...
Ok, to a certain extent, I can see where you're coming from, but my approach is different. Heinrich Pesch wrote: The bilingual file is only an intermediate. Copying numbers will fill the TM with useless stuff: "Oh, my TM has one hundred thousand segments, ninety thousand of them are numbers". I can only speak of SDL Studio here, but as far as I know, numbers-only segments don't go into the TM (nor should they). Of course I'm doing work on segments that are identical in the target language. I need to have a look at them and decide. I'm still translating, only that the translation happens to be identical to the source. My word rate reflects that in the large scale there will always be some segments that I don't need to change. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Do you fill in all segments?
