Portuguese to English Law/Patents Law (general)
Context: this is a line after a signature at the bottom of a court letter. It reads: "Sintra, 15.01.2013 (ac. de serviço; baixa medica após cirurgia desde 26.11.2012 a 21.12.2012 e férias judiciais)".

I know that 'acumulação de serviço' means that the person holds two or more positions at the same time, but I am not clear whether the signatory is covering for someone else who is away (looks like it) or is making up time after returning from sick leave.

Can anybody clarify this please?

Hi Tiago, No, I don't think that 2nd scenario is probable. I think what we have here is a judge who is covering for an absent colleague as well as managing his own case load. But I think that in trying to explain things to the reader I am exceeding my brief as the translator - introducing one's own interpretation is something that should never occur ina legal translation. I think I may have to accept the literal translation, unsatisfactory as it is.

Is that 2nd scenario probable? Don't you have a right to your paycheck while taking a sick leave? On the other hand, if the signatory is someone covering for the one recovering from surgery, shouldn't it say something like "ac. de serviço em compensação pela baixa médica de pessoa x..."?

Don't have any answers, just trying to provide some food for thought...

I realise what it is, João - as I made clear in my question. I was just wondering if anyone can deduce from the context whether the signatory is the person who was off sick or is covering for them. I don't think a court letter in the EN speaking world would say "accumulation of public offices" - it would be more specific about the status of the signatory.

excess of work

I understand the person is on medical leave for enduring perhaps continuing excess of work. I am sure that acumulacao de servico is very different from acumulacao de cargos, which is the one the person proposing this problem would like it to be.
