This is what we say where I'm from in the US.
It means to cause someone to get into a bad situation.
Example: She's always getting me into shit/causing me shit

...he bothers her when he gets her into shit and her patience is wearing thin out before she gives him a kick in the ass...

May sound a bit strong, but both words are nowadays often heard colloquially in the UK (metaphorically, not literally), and the French original is strong too. You might say:
"... is fed up when he fucks her about ... until she loses patience and tells him to bugger off" might do it, but perhaps not in the USA where they are more prim.
