Czech term

zimní přípravek

Czech to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Car performance testing
Anyone know what we call this in English please? Apparently something you pour into petrol tanks etc.in winter and can be used for pre-treating car locks to stop them freezing up
Many thanks.

Discussion

Pavel Blann Nov 9, 2006:
The above applies more to gas and a situation when the temperature does not fall below a given threshold. When it does or if you have a diesel fuel then pls also see my answer below. "Zimní přípravek" can be used in that case, too.
Radovan Pletka Nov 8, 2006:
of the water in the gas tank. If this never ahppened to you and you nbever used for example http://www.amazon.com/Gas-line-Antifreeze-Water-Remover-fl-o...
you are lucky and live in warm climate. Good luck
Radovan Pletka Nov 8, 2006:
can come the the engine and you run out of gas even with your tank full. This can happen to both gas and diesel engines. The prevention of this situation is to use water removers, containing alcohol, which mix with the water and prevents freezing
Radovan Pletka Nov 8, 2006:
All gas tanks soon or later contain a bit of water on the bottom of the tank, from condensation, rain, humidity, gas impurities, etc. When it is really cold, the water freezes and resulting ice blocks the gas flow and your car simply dies because no gas
Radovan Pletka Nov 8, 2006:
The best prevention is to park the car in the heated garage (smile) and do not allow people without technical sense to touch it (smile)

Selected

fuel- or gas-line antifreeze / door lock antifreeze

Antifreeze is O.K. or if you want to be more specific I would propose these expressions.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Radovan Pletka : I would be very carefull with antifreeze, because coolant in your tank will not be exactly a tiger

Lock D-Icer and Gas Line Antifreeze

"Lock D-Icer" - this is for the locks on car doors.
"Gas Line Antifreeze" - is for fuel.

or: winter additive

This is for diesel fuel, which also contains paraffin that becomes solid at low temperatures and clogs the in-line fuel filter. In this case, it is not freezing as such but rather solidifying.

To summarize, "zimní přípravek" can be any of the following (and more :)

1. Car Lock Antifreeze (a preventive measure)
2. Defroster (after-the-fact for car locks, wipers, etc.)
3. Gas-line Antifreeze (preventive measure for water in petrol)
4. Winter Additive (before and after-the-fact for paraffin in diesel)

Hi Charlie! At least grey hair looks distinguished on a man ;-)
Note from asker:
Thanks Monique. I have gone for Misha's answer because has not got any points in this cat. yet..., I used antifreeze as you suggested and am not worried about you being a blonde! (better than being a greyie like me!)
Peer comment(s):

disagree Radovan Pletka : coolant se nedava do benzinove nadrze,. ale do chladice (smile)

Radku, I might be a blonde but what do you think about the following. Coolant, which is commonly called antifreeze, is a mixture of ethylene or propylene glycol and water, usually in a 50/50 ratio. :-) Do you put something into your petrol tank??? I don't
