French term
examen de base commun
French to English
Social Sciences
Education / Pedagogy
sports education
Heading in a proposed private university course in sports management:
• Examen de base commun
o Questionnaire à choix multiples (questions élaborées par XXX (university) et
o Lire, comprendre des états financiers / prendre les décisions nécessaires ou
o Effectuer un exercice de comptabilité de base
An exam to be given to incoming students to gauge the different levels of competency. Students in this program come from various countries and speak various languages. So the idea is not identify the differences, but rather the commonalities in the knowledge levels of freshmen.
It's on the tip of my tongue, but can't get it into my ear...
TIA for your help.

B D Finch
: The students have already been admitted. See definition of "common entrance exam": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Entrance_Examination, which explains that it is a specific type of exam for entry to independent schools in Britain.

Core part of the exam
Commonly the exams are comprised of two parts; one is a main part, which is for all candidates to take to gauge the general knowledge that all should know, and the other would be a subject part tailored to candidates specialized subject background. In your case, the subject part would be in or about a language.

core knowledge test
Whatever this is called, it is a test rather than an exam. The students have already been admitted, so it is not an entrance exam.

The "base commun" is the core knowledge that the university wants to check that the students have, so that any lack of such core knowledge can be remedied. The phrase describes what is tested by the "examen", rather than the "examen" itself.
