As Tom says, there seems to be no satisfactory English translation for "mondano". How about chic?

for 20 years I've been looking for an English equivalent of "mondano" and have never found one that satisfies me....

fashionable/trendy
I think that mondano today is closer to fashionable than elegant. Very fashionable people are often "out of style", making places they frequent not much elegant. See some places in Sardinia during the summer

Tom in London
: but "mondano" doesn't really mean either "elegant" or "fashionable" anyway.

The nearby town of Anacapri, the less *glitzy* but equally snobbish alternative to Capri town, is responsible for the waste flow affecting the Grotta Azzurra.
