pre-arranged trips
In other words, the solicitors asked for more time so as to take into account the fact that their client may not be available to serve his defence on the established date, because he has to go on some trip or other. Perhaps he's a businessman. The use of the word "committments" suggests that he has to travel somewhere, although it's not clear whether he has merely booked a trip somewhere or is required to travel as part of his job. More context would help.

: indeed, the level of "commitment" is perhaps open to interpretation. I may have made a commitment to go to the pub tonight, but if you offered me £500 to stay at home, I'd probably find I wasn't that committed after all :-)

: yes I agree with you Charlie, but when lawyers are involved in this case the 'commitment' should mean more obligations then just going to the pub ;-)

it is a way of getting a postponement, a way of using the procedural rules to delay the trial
How am I so sure? Well, of course it is only a supposition, given the limited facts presented here. However, it would have to be someone very very important, or a public official, who really had to be somewhere else than his own criminal trial. So it is a reasonable conclusion, beyond circumstantial, that it is a dodge, and not really the truth - that he really had made these out of town commitments that could not be broken.

travelling obligations
duties which must be done on a trip

: sorry, not here//duty is close to the meaning of commitment, for ex.: "I have undertaken the following commitments" but here it is modified by travelling and doesn't really fit- could work if his entire job was to travel

commitments to travel OR commitments requiring/involving travel
Perhaps it is just the word "travelling" which has confused you (as if the commitments were wandering about and therefore not fixed). That is a UK construction. But it means the same as the US English construction "travel commitments".
The travel may or may not be prearranged or contracted, but the commitment to travel is there and presents a scheduling conflict.
