I had already translated quite a large number of projects from Dutch and English into the Turkish language before deciding, in 2007, to work fulltime as a translator. Since then I have been working continuously as a translator/interpreter in the language combinations Turkish/English and Turkish/Dutch.

Sworn translator
In 2005, I completed my training at the SIGV (Institute for Court Interpreters and Translators) and was awarded my translator’s certificate. In the same year, I was sworn in as a fully qualified translator at the magistrate’s court in Amsterdam.

Translation experience
In the years that I worked as an English/Turkish translator, most of my work was focussed on the translation of medical documents, as that was what most of my clients required at the time. I gained considerable experience in a number of medical areas, including, in particular, autism, ADHD and psychiatry.

The term ‘technical translations’ is an extremely broad one, and one that demands in-depth knowledge of the relevant terminology. Turkish, in particular, is a complicated and bountiful language when it comes to technical specifications. For example, the English word ‘pin’ has no fewer than 16 different meanings in Turkish, each of which applies to one specific technical discipline.

No translator working in the area of English/Turkish translations can therefore credibly claim to be completely proficient in the area of technical translations. However, my own experience has taught me that the best way to approach technical translations is to continually seek out reliable and up-to-date books of reference.

I have an extensive collection of technical dictionaries and I also often consult my own pool of technical translators when in the process of completing a technical translation. I specialise in a number of technical areas, including textiles, industrial health & safety and instruction manuals for machines and other equipment.

Translation tools
I have been awarded a SDL Trados ‘advanced user’ certificate and I use the new and popular translation tool Wordbee on a regular basis.

Interpreter experience
Though the amount of time I am able to dedicate to translations from English to Turkish is often quite limited, it is work that I do thoroughly enjoy. Thanks to my fluency in the Dutch, Turkish and English languages, I am often asked to help out with interpreting at English language presentations and conferences. I also do a considerable amount of translation work for delegations and working groups visiting from Turkey, as I established a large network in that country during the years that I lived there.

In a nutshell: I am a versatile Turkish translator who loves both his work and the process of achieving only the very best results.

Voor 2007 heb ik verschillende projecten vertaald vanuit het Engels en het Nederlands naar het Turks. Pas in 2007 ben ik als fulltime vertaler Turks-Nederlands aan de slag gegaan. Sinds 2007 werk ik dan ook ononderbroken als tolk/vertaler Turks-Nederlands en tolk/vertaler Turks-Engels.

Beëdigd vertaler Turks
In 2005 heb ik mijn opleiding aan de onderwijsinstelling SIGV, Stichting Instituut voor Gerechtstolken en Vertalers, afgerond en mijn vertaaldiploma behaald. In datzelfde jaar heb ik mijn eed afgelegd in de rechtbank te Amsterdam en ben ik beëdigd vertaler geworden.

Vertaalervaring
In de jaren dat ik als vertaler Nederlands-Turks heb gewerkt, heb ik voornamelijk medische stukken vertaald omdat mijn eerste klanten vooral behoefte hadden aan vertalingen op medisch gebied. De meeste ervaring die ik heb opgedaan op medisch gebied betreft de vakgebieden: autisme, ADHD en psychiatrie.

Technisch vertalen is een erg ruim begrip en maakt gebruik van een uitgebreide terminologie. Vooral in het Turks zijn er geen beperkingen in het aantal technische vaktermen. Zo heeft het Engelse woordje ‘pin’ 16 betekenissen in het Turks, voor elke technische discipline één betekenis.

Hierdoor is het niet geloofwaardig als een vertaler Nederlands-Turks beweert dat hij professioneel is op het gebied van technische vertalingen. Wat erg nuttig is op dit gebied, wat ik zelf namelijk heb gedaan, is het voortdurend verzamelen van betrouwbare naslagwerken.

Ik ben in het bezit van tal van woordenboeken om op technisch gebied te kunnen vertalen en ik krijg ook hulp uit mijn netwerk van technische vertalers. Mijn technische specialisatiegebieden zijn textiel, arbeidsveiligheid en gebruiksaanwijzingen van machines of apparaten.

Vertaaltools
Ik ben in het bezit van een SDL Trados ‘advanced user’ certificaat en ik maak vaak gebruik van de nieuwe populaire vertaaltool Wordbee.

Tolkervaring
Ofschoon ik weinig tijd overhoud voor vertalingen van het Nederlands naar het Turks, verricht ik deze wel met veel plezier. Omdat ik het Nederlands-Engels-Turks machtig ben, word ik erg vaak uitgenodigd voor vergaderingen met Engelse presentaties. Hier komt nog bij dat ik vaak moet vertalen voor zakelijke delegaties en werkgroepen uit Turkije omdat ik een groot netwerk in Turkije heb en daar een lange tijd heb gewoond.

Dit ben ik dus: een veelzijdige vertaler Turks die geniet van het vertalen van een tekst en van het proces om het beste resultaat neer te zetten.
