The braking torque is low at the higher initial speed and increases to a high peak value as the motor decelerates; however, it drops rapidly to zero speed (Fig. 4b). The losses are approximately the same as that for a single start. Higher braking torque can be obtained by using higher values of dc voltage and by inserting external resistance in the rotor circuit for a wound-rotor motor.
Approximately 150 percent rated current (dc) is required to produce an average
braking torque of 100 percent starting torque.
