Well, I bought a new legal textbook on Monday for me to gradually work my way through this year and improve my knowledge of an area of Turkish law about which I need to know more, so it would appear that my professional development goal for 2015 is to continue deepening my knowledge of the specialist area in which I principally work.

At the same time, the intention here is to improve the quality of my work in an area in which I expect to see increased demand and, thus, increase my income, so perhaps the answer should really be a combination of the above.

It is resolution-making season and I don't usually have one, be it personal or business. I don’t really have any long term plans – I have learned over the years that you can’t ever really plan things as life is full of surprises, good and bad. You never know what is going to be just around the corner! I tend to take things as they come rather than plan ahead. Happy New Year to you all!

Income and types of jobs Jan 1, 2015

I just finished writing down my resolution. It has mostly to do with income, but also with balance of my client base. I'm looking forward to starting up with another major client (I used to work for them 20 years ago). I want to focus more on the new client and de-emphasize one that currently accounts for about 30% of my business.

I like to save my goals from year to year and monitor the trend and see how much I've accomplished on my long-term lists.

No shtinkin' resolution for me Jan 1, 2015

Question: this New Year resolutions business, is it something imported from America? Is it something so quintessentially American that we have to have it?

I wonder how the tradition of adopting new year resolutions came about. I never embraced it and never will. It's silly, like so many human traditions.

Enjoy your own version of 2015 nonetheless ♫

About majorities Jan 1, 2015

A majority of translators are women. Never give women the option "A combination of the above" in a survey. A majority will choose that option.

Revolutionize video game translation!!! Jan 1, 2015

I love writing out ideas and making plans for the future. I have a lot of goals and things that I will be doing this year, though I prefer to work in quarters.

I really want to simply stabilize my income and diversify a little bit so that I'm not so dependent on translation. I wrote this a couple of days ago that sums everything up...

This custom is not prevalent in India Jan 2, 2015

India celebrates new year at different times - depending on seasons and harvest cycles prevalent in different parts of the country. For example, in Tamil Nadu, it is usually during Pongal, which falls on 14 Jan or there about (India also follows many calendars, many of which are lunar-based, so the dates don't exactly match the Gregorian calendar every year) - that is the time when the Sun's movement downwards below the equator reaches its maximum limit, after which it starts to move upwards.... In Kerala and may other parts, the new year is celebrated on April 14, by which time the rice crops are harvested and it is possible for the farming community to take a breather and enjoy.

In many northern states, such as Gujarat, the new year is celebrated along with the main religious festival of Diwali in October-November.

The concept of making a new year resolution is not commonly associated with any of these festivals.

Moreover, in India, even the financial year does not begin on 1 Jan. The financial year is from 1 April to 31 March.

Nevertheless, I do set an income target for the year. I find this useful for keeping myself focused on my earnings, and for taking remedial steps in time when the earnings appear to be dipping.

Agree with Claudia, here.

The only meaning I can glean from your post is that "women can't make up their minds." Is this what you really mean? If so, that would be a really sexist comment in a public forum, wouldn't it, Jon.

Please do us all a favor and tell us all what you meant.

Superstition + Poor Planning Jan 3, 2015

It's funny to see people making "new year" decisions or promises. This is a typical attitude of those who make no planning all year round. Planning is constant. Progress and performance assessments are constant. Changes to improve and adaptation to maket conditions are constant.

If you make decisions or promises for yourself for the new year, but you have no ongoing projects and plans all year round, I'm sorry, but you'll be making the same decisions and promises again next December

Superstitions have never ever led anyone anywhere but into the pit.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
