Terwijl in de architectuur van de jaren zeventig het bouwen voor de buurt voorop stond en gestalte kreeg in de stadsvernieuwing, vormde in de jaren negentig stedelijke revitalisering de kern, in een poging bewoning en werkgelegenheid vast te houden in de stad. Om de investeringen in verlaten en verwaarloosde stadsdelen te ondersteunen, werd mede om verleidelijke architectuur gevraagd. Het vormde de opmaat tot de enorme vraag naar beeldbepalende of iconografische gebouwen.
Door de financiële crisis van september 2008 is deze vraag plotseling enorm ingezakt. Ze is weliswaar niet verdwenen, maar teruggebracht tot normale proporties en vormt op dit moment een soort nichemarkt. Maar er is nog iets anders. Van veel iconografische gebouwen was de noodzaak niet altijd even duidelijk en leek sprake te zijn van een anti maatschappelijke verspilling, zonder enig gevoel van verantwoordelijkheid voor de gebruikers. Dit betekent, dat de architectuur haar noodzaak opnieuw moeten bevechten.
Dankzij de alarmerende rapporten die de afgelopen maanden en jaren over klimaat en energie zijn verschenen, is duurzaamheid uitgegroeid tot een van de belangrijkste thema’s van de toekomst. Het sterk gegroeide milieubewustzijn en de wens tot duurzame ontwikkeling vormen een serieuze uitdaging voor de architectuur. De toenemende nadruk op herbestemming, herontwikkeling en renovatie van bestaande gebouwen en stedelijke gebieden onderstrepen dit.
Architectuur kan zich niet langer beperken tot het object, maar zal tevens de omgeving erbij moeten betrekken. Inzet is het ontwerpen van gebouwen waarin licht, lucht en ruimte zo zijn georganiseerd en gematerialiseerd, dat de kwaliteit van het gebruik sterk wordt verbeterd. Omdat keuzes op het gebied van architectuur sterk samenhangen met beslissingen over techniek en uitvoering, zal architectuur een nieuwe ecologische esthetiek moeten ontwikkelen. Het besef groeit, dat duurzaamheid alleen dan meer is dan een hype, indien er een idee van schoonheid mee is verbonden.
Terwijl de economische recessie het aantal opdrachten aan architecten de laatste maanden flink doet afnemen, blijkt uit onderzoek dat de markt voor duurzame architectuur snel groeit. In reactie op de vraag vanuit de markt blijken ook architectenbureaus zich in rap tempo te ontwikkelen tot professionele partners in een milieubewust bouwproces. Daarnaast maken regelgeving vanuit de overheid en eisen bij aanbestedingsprocedures duurzaamheid tot een essentieel onderdeel van het architectonische voorstel. Het lijkt erop dat hierbij vooral wordt gelet op het implementeren van techniek en het rekening houden met klimaat en oriëntatie.
Ro Koster en Ad Kil van Ro en Ad architecten, Jacob van Rijs van MVRDV en Joost Ector van Ector Hoogstad architecten hebben uiteenlopende visies op duurzaamheid. Uit deze wordt duidelijk dat duurzame architectuur ook de basis van het vak herdefinieert. Zo zal er moeten worden nagedacht over nieuwe typologieën, ontwerpen voor meerdere generaties, meervoudig grondgebruik, herbestemming van bestaande gebouwen, comfort en cyclische materiaalprocessen.
Duurzame esthetiek lijkt daarbij het sleutelwoord. Zowel in de betekenis van een architectonische vormentaal die zich op lange termijn verbindt aan zijn context als in de zin van een architectuur die de symbiose van mens en natuur integraal onderdeel maakt van het ontwerpproces.
In het 20ste arrondissement in Parijs heeft architect Eduard François 98 wooneenheden en elf kunstenaarsateliers gerealiseerd. Van het programma van 7700 vierkante meter is het grootste deel geprojecteerd in het hart van het blok, niet zichtbaar vanaf de straat. De gebruikte materialen sluiten aan op die welke in deze buurt veel voorkomen. Aan weerzijden van een corridorachtige laan wisselen maisonnettes en gebouwen met gevels van groeiende wijnstokken elkaar af. De tuin vormt het hart van het project. Voor de beplanting zijn verschillende soorten geselecteerd die de ecologische karakteristieken van het nieuwe landschap op natuurlijke wijze vasthouden. Op de rijke tuinaarde, die niet is vermengd met het bouwafval zullen de planten uitgroeien en zich vermengen met nieuwkomers. Het is reden dat François het project Bio Eden noemt.
Dat binnen een totaalconcept klimatologische, economische en sociale duurzaamheid zijn te verenigen, toont Steven Holl Architects aan met Linked Hybrid. Met dit stadsblok in Beijing, geeft Holl kritisch commentaar op de veel voorkomende ommuurde enclaves voor de bezittende klasse in de Chinese hoofdstad. Negen toren herbergen tweehonderd verschillende types woningen en drie publieke lagen. De onderste laag wordt gevormd door een pleinachtige ruimte omgeven door commerciële ruimtes. De tweede bestaat uit semi-publieke daktuinen, de derde en bovenste laag is een systeem van publiek toegankelijke luchtbruggen tussen de torens met recreatieve functies. Linked Hybrid maakt zoveel mogelijk gebruik van passieve energie. Een centraal luchtverversingsysteem steriliseert de vervulde stadslucht en blaast het via een geavanceerd buizensysteem naar elke ruimte. De energiebesparende maatregelen zullen naar verwachting zichzelf in vijftien jaar terugverdienen.
De Franse architecten Anne Lacaton en Jean-Philippe Vassal willen door een maximum aan ruimte aan te bieden, een maximum aan gebruiksvrijheid mogelijk maken. En dat alles met een strakke kostenbeheersing. Dit credo hanteerden zij ook bij de Architectuurschool in Nantes (F), waar in plaats van de gevraagde tienduizend vierkante meter, twaalfduizend is gerealiseerd binnen het vastgestelde budget. De school staat aan de oevers van de Loire op een trapeziumvormig grondstuk, aan vier zijden omgeven door straten. Door te bouwen tot aan de kavelgrens is de gebouwde oppervlakte gemaximaliseerd. Plateaus die even groot zijn als de begane grond worden ondersteund door een hoofddraagconstructie in beton met een dubbele hoogte. Zij zijn verbonden door een hellingbaan die langs de gevel omhoog zigzagt. Zo dringt de stad het gebouw binnen.
Projecten
Het Neues Museum in Berlijn (D), in 1859 ontworpen door F.A. Stüler, is tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zwaar gebombardeerd. Eind vorige eeuw besloot Berlijn de ruïne te renoveren en koos voor het plan van David Chipperfield. Op basis van studies nam hij de oorspronkelijke vorm als uitgangspunt zonder terug te grijpen op een pure reconstructie. De complexe structuur die Stüler destijds aanbracht, is in de restauratie geëxpliciteerd. Vernieuwingen zijn duidelijk herkenbaar, zoals bij de monumentale trap middenin een ruimte van baksteen zonder de wederopbouw van originele ornamenten. De verwoeste oost- en westhoek zijn vervangen. Om de basisvorm en de symmetrie te herstellen is gekozen voor een nieuwe hoekkoepel. Als het in oktober wordt geopend, is het museum het derde gerenoveerde gebouw op het Museuminsel.
De veertig meter hoge Bostoren ontworpen door SeARCH, biedt een panoramisch uitzicht op het landgoed Schovenhorst in Putten en dient tevens als trouwlocatie. Het metalen draaihek van de entree past binnen de stalen draagconstructie van de toren. Tijdens de beklimming zijn vanaf diverse ‘takken’, zoals plateaus, een zwevende trap of een klimnet, alle lagen van het bos te ervaren. De wandeling eindigt op een platform, wat naast uitkijkpost, ook een tuin is. Het opgetilde bos is een aanvulling op de bestaande boomsoortencollectie. De rvs platen aan de onderkant van de bak waarin bomen zijn geplant, weerspiegelen het bos waardoor de toren deel gaat uitmaken van de omgeving.
Tussen de vrijstaande bakstenen woningen in de Vinex-wijk Leische Rijn, is er één die eruit springt. Bij woonhuis Bierings ontworpen door Rocha Tombal Architecten is het archetypishe huis verpakt in een schil van Western Red Cedar latten. Raamopeningen kijken als priemende ogen op de omgeving en leveren een unieke combinatie van licht en zicht op. In het interieur zijn de functies gehusseld, op de begane grond de woonkeuken en kinderkamer, op de verdieping de woonkamer en ouderslaapkamer. De plastische witte ruimtes zijn via divergerende en convergerende lijnen met elkaar in relatie gebracht.
Techniek
Het Bijlmer Parktheater in Amsterdam Zuidoost huisvest vier theatergroepen. In workshops met alle betrokkenen ontwikkelde Paul de Ruiter het programma van eisen en het gebouwconcept. De zaal is met behulp van ophijsbare coulissen en in- en uitschuifbare tribunes aan te passen voor zowel theater- als circusvoorstellingen. De glazen omloop rondom de zaal zorgt overdag voor licht in de repetitieruimtes. Het paviljoenachtige gebouw staat deels in het water. De houtconstructie bestaat uit een rondgewalste staalconstructie van liggers op kolommen. Voor de gevelbekleding is gebruik gemaakt van stroken verticaal geprofileerd aluminium en verticale houten lamellen. Deze wordt op de verdieping onderbreken door horizontale glasstroken.
Het Sliding House in Suffolk (GB) heeft twee gezichten, transparant of gesloten. dRMM heeft het huis in drieën opgedeeld: een hoofdhuis (half van glas en half bekleed met rood rubber), een vrijstaande garage en een gastenverblijf. Deze verzameling van gebouwen is overdekt met een beschermende schil van zestien meter lang. De overkapping rijdt op stalen rails aangedreven door elektromotoren en kan in zes minuten het glazen gedeelte van het hoofdhuis vrijmaken of toedekken. De vijftig millimeter grote spleet tussen huis en overkapping is afgesloten met borstels. De ‘stilstaande gebouwdelen’ bestaan uit geïsoleerde prefab houtpanelen, ingepakt in een waterdicht rubberen membraan en afgewerkt met een regenscherm van horizontale houten planken.
Het Ooievaarplein vormt het sluitstuk van de herstructurering van een wijk in Hilversum en vormt de verbinding tussen de voor- en naoorlogse ontwerpen van W.M. Dudok. De drie woonblokken rondom het plein hebben niet dezelfde overdadige vormgeving, maar dragen een eigentijdse bakstenenornamentiek. Diverse metselverbanden en fel gekleurde oranje kozijnen zorgen voor een stedebouwkundig verband met de rest van de wijk. De textuur van de oranje strengperssteen die Kingma Roorda hiervoor liet vervaardigen, geeft het geveloppervlak een bijzondere dieptewerking. De stenen zijn voegloos verlijmd, wat de dieptewerking vergroot.

While in the architecture of the seventies building for the neighbourhood had the greatest priority and took shape in urban renewal projects, in the nineties urban revitalization was central, in an attempt to retain residential occupation and employment in the city. To support investment in desolate and neglected urban districts, there was also a demand for alluring architecture. It was the prelude to the enormous demand for visually dominant or iconographic buildings.
Since the financial crisis in September 2008, demand has suddenly plummeted. It has not entirely disappeared, but it has been brought back to normal proportions and has developed into a sort of niche market. But there is something else. The need for many iconographic buildings was not always entirely clear and it seemed to be a matter of anti-society wastefulness, without any sense of responsibility for the users. Consequently, architecture has to fight for the need for such buildings once again.
As a result of the alarming reports which have appeared in the last months and years about climate and energy, sustainability has developed into one of the most important themes for the future. The strong growth of environmental awareness and the desire for sustainable development present a serious challenge for architecture. The increasing emphasis on new use, re-development and renovation of existing buildings and urban areas underlines this situation.
Architecture can no longer limit itself to the object, but will have to include the surroundings as well. The commitment is the design of buildings in which light, air and space are organized and materialized in such a way that the quality of use of the building is greatly improved. Architectural choices are strongly linked to decisions about technology and realization, which means that architecture will have to develop new ecological aesthetics. There is a growing understanding that sustainability is more than just a hype, provided an idea of beauty is linked to it.
While the economic recession has seriously diminished the number of assignments granted to architects in the last few months, research has shown that the market for sustainable architecture is growing fast. In response to market demand, architectural firms also seem to be rapidly developing into professional partners in an environmentally-aware building process. In addition, government regulations and the requirements of tender procedures are making sustainability into an essential part of what the architectonic world has to offer. It appears that the main focus here is on the implementation of technology and consideration of climate and orientation.
Ro Koster and Ad Kil from Ro en Ad architecten, Jacob van Rijs from MVRDV and Joost Ector from Ector Hoogstad architecten have different visions of sustainability. From these differing opinions, it is clear that sustainable architecture is also redefining the very basis of the profession. It means that reflection is required on new typologies, developing for several generations, multiple use of land, giving existing buildings a new function, comfort and cyclical material processes.
Sustainable aesthetics seem to be the key here. Both in terms of an architectonic language of form which is connected to its context in the long term as in the sense of architecture which makes the symbiosis of man and nature an integral part of the design process.
In the 20th arrondissement in Paris, architect Eduard François has realized 98 housing units and eleven studios for artists. Of the 7,700 square metre project, the largest part is scheduled in the heart of the block, and is invisible from the street. The materials used are in keeping with the materials commonly used in this district. On both sides of a corridor-like avenue, maisonettes and buildings alternate with façades of growing vines. The garden is the heart of the project. For the plants, different sorts have been chosen which stick to the ecological characteristics of the new landscape in a natural way. The rich garden soil, which is not mixed with building waste, will help the plants to grow and mingle with new additions. That is why François has named the project Bio Eden.
That it is possible to combine climatic, economic and social sustainability in an overall concept, has been demonstrated by Steven Holl Architects with Linked Hybrid. With this city block in Beijing, Holl is making a critical comment on the widespread existence of walled enclaves for the propertied classes in the Chinese capital. Nine towers accommodate two hundred different types of housing and three levels for public use. The lowest level is formed by sort of square surrounded by commercial units. The second consists of semi-public roof gardens and the third and uppermost level is a system of elevated bridges between the towers which have recreational functions and are open to the public. Linked Hybrid makes as much use as possible of passive energy. A central ventilation system sterilizes the polluted city air and brings it to each area through an advanced pipe system. The energy-saving measures are expected to pay for themselves in fifteen years.
French architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal want to provide the maximum amount of space to enable maximum freedom of use. And all of this with strict cost control. This credo was also employed at the School of Architecture in Nantes (F), where instead of the ten thousand square metres asked for, they realized twelve thousand within the available budget. The school is situated on the banks of the Loire on a trapezium-shaped piece of ground, and is surrounded on four sides by streets. By building right up to the edge of the plot, the built surface area has been maximized. Plateaus the same size as the ground floor are supported by a main load bearing double-height concrete construction. They are connected by a sloping ramp which zigzags upwards along the façade. In this way, the city can penetrate the building.
Projects
The Neues Museum in Berlin (D), designed in 1859 by F.A. Stüler, was heavily bombed during the Second World War. At the end of last century, the city of Berlin decided to renovate the ruin and chose the plan submitted by David Chipperfield. On the basis of studies, he took the original form as starting point without reverting to a complete reconstruction. The complex structure originally introduced by Stüler, has been made explicit in the restoration. Innovations are clearly recognizable, such as the monumental stairs in the middle of a brick space without the reconstruction of the original ornamentation. The destroyed east and west corners have been replaced. In order to restore the basic form and symmetry, a choice has been made for a new corner dome. When it is opened in October, the museum will be the third renovated building on the Museuminsel.
The forty metre high Bostoren (Woodland Tower) designed by SeARCH, provides a panoramic view over the Schovenhorst country estate in Putten and is also used as a wedding location. The metal swing gate at the entrance fits within the steel load bearing construction of the tower. During the climb, every level of the woods can be experienced from various 'branches', such as plateaus, a suspended stair or a climbing net. The walk ends on a platform which, besides being a look-out post, is also a garden. The raised woodland is an addition to the existing collection of tree varieties. The stainless steel plates on the underside of the trough where trees are planted reflect the woods, making the tower part of its surroundings.
Between all the detached brick houses in the Leidsche Rijn Vinex location, there is one house in particular which stands out from the crowd. For the Bierings' private house, designed by Rocha Tombal Architecten, the archetypical house has been wrapped in a shell of Western Red Cedar slats. Window openings look out on the surroundings like piercing eyes and provide a unique combination of light and outlook. Inside, the functions have been shuffled; the dining kitchen and children's room are on the ground floor with the living room and master bedroom on the first floor. The expressive white rooms form a relationship with each other by way of diverging and converging lines.
Technology
The Bijlmer Park theatre in South-East Amsterdam houses four theatre companies. During workshops with everyone involved, Paul de Ruiter developed the schedule of requirements and the building concept. The auditorium can be adapted for both theatre and circus performances by means of moveable seat rows, which can be slid in and out as required. The glass gallery round the auditorium provides light during the day in the rehearsal areas. The pavilion-like building stands partly in water. The wooden construction consists of a steel construction of joists on pillars, rolled into an ellipse. For the cladding on the façade, bands of vertical moulded aluminium and vertical wooden strips have been used. These are interrupted at storey level by horizontal bands of glass.
Sliding House in Suffolk (GB) has two faces, transparent or closed. dRMM divided the house in three: The main house (half glass and half clad with red rubber), a detached garage and a guest wing. This collection of buildings is covered over with a sixteen metre long protective shell. The roofing runs on steel rails driven by electro motors and can cover or uncover the glass part of the main house in six minutes. The fifty millimetre gap between the house and the roofing is closed off with brushes. The ‘stationary building parts' consist of isolated prefab wooden panels, packed into a watertight rubber membrane and finished off with a rain screen of horizontal wooden planks.
The Ooievaarplein (Stork Square) is the final piece in the restructuring of a neighbourhood in Hilversum and makes the connection between the pre and post-war designs created by W.M. Dudok. The three residential blocks round the square do not have the same extravagant design, but carry modern brick ornamentation. Various brick-laid connections and bright orange window frames provide a town planning link to the rest of the neighbourhood. The texture of the orange wire-cut brick which Kingma Roorda had specially produced for the project, gives the exterior wall surface a special three-dimensional effect. The bricks are glued together seamlessly, which increases the effect.
