Brontekst - Nederlands Het is goed om van tijd tot tijd de balans op te maken. Nu is zo’n moment. Precies tien jaar geleden brak het internet door naar het grote publiek. Dat gebeurde door een experiment in het kader van de gemeente-raadsverkiezingen van 1994 waarin gekeken werd hoe internet kon helpen om politiek en burgers dichter bij elkaar te brengen. Dat experiment was De Digitale Stad. En het was een doorslaand succes. Zo’n 10.000 mensen deden eraan mee en de Digitale Stad groeide uit tot de grootste internetgemeenschap in Europa van die tijd. Burgers gebruikten het als platform om met elkaar te communiceren en te discussiëren. Voor overheden en andere organisaties werd het een nieuw kanaal om informatie te verstrekken. In zeer korte tijd werd De Digitale Stad een wereldwijd bekend voorbeeld hoe het internet kon bijdragen aan pluriforme informatievoorziening, participatie aan het democratische proces en het leggen van nieuwe sociale verbanden tussen burgers. En niet op de laatste plaats, het was voor velen de eerste kennismaking met de mogelijkheden van het internet.
