Nederlands naar Engels: Ten years of ICT and Society
Nu is zo’n moment.
Vertaling - Engels It is a good thing to draw up the balance sheet from time to time. Now is the time. Exactly ten years ago, internet broke through to the general public. This happened in an experiment in the sphere of the municipal council elections of 1994 when the way the internet could help to bring politics and the citizens closer together was examined. This experiment was Digital City. It was a resounding success. Approximately 10 000 people participated and Digital City grew into the largest internet community in Europe at that time. Citizens used this as a communication and discussion platform. For government and other organisations it became a new channel for providing information. In record time, Digital City became a world famous example of how the internet may contribute to multilevel information provision, participation in the democratic process and the creation of new social bonds between citizens. And last but not least, for many it was to become the first introduction to the possibilities of internet.
