Spanish to English: Sport General field: Other Detailed field: Sports / Fitness / Recreation
Translation - English Sport is a regulated physical activity, normally competitive in nature, which can improve the physical condition of those practicing it (Antúnez, 2001). It possesses certain characteristics which differentiate it from a game.
The Royal Spanish Academy (RSA), in its Dictionary of the Spanish Language, defines sport as a “physical activity, carried out as a game or in competition, whose practice involves training and adherence to a set of rules”. They also describe it, in a second, broader sense, as “recreation, pastime, pleasure, entertainment or physical exercise, generally outdoors”.
On the other hand, the European Sports Charter defines it as: “Any type of physical activity, which, either through an organised participation or not, aims to express or improve physical or mental condition, develop social relationships or obtain results in competition at all levels.”
Institutionally, for an activity to be considered sport, it must be endorsed by recognised structures of administration and control which are responsible for regulating it (sporting organizations).
That an activity fails to be recognised institutionally as sport does not prevent it from being considered so in popular terms, such as happens with rural or alternative sport.
Spanish to English: Literature General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Translation - English Literature, in its broadest sense, is any written work, although some definitions include texts that are spoken or sung.
In a more restricted and traditional sense, literature is that which possesses literary merit and favours ‘literariness’, as opposed to ordinary language.
The term literature refers also to the complete set of literary productions of a country, an era or even a genre (Greek literature, 18th Century literature, fantasy literature, and so on), and the group of work that deal with a particular art or science (medical or legal literature, for example).
In artistic terms, literature is the art of the word, whether that be the oral or written word.
The study of it is known as literary theory.
