I graduated with an MA in Economics from University of Karachi in 1993. Though, I’ve done diverse jobs over the years but my banking industry experience started in 2004 when I joined the Consumer Finance Department of Faysal Bank Limited. During a period of about two years, I gained considerable experience in dealing with corporate customers to address their automobile leasing requirements. Thereafter, I joined Tameer Microfinance Bank during August 2006 as Manager Credit Administration and laid the foundation for the non-existent Risk Division under the able leadership of a high caliber Chief Risk Officer. Across Pakistan, verification and review teams were built from scratch in order to curb delinquency that had risen enormously due to uncontrolled lending. I was instrumental in developing relevant policies/guidelines that included:
• Risk management framework
• Credit risk policy
• Operational risk policy
• Market & liquidity risk policy
• Product specific credit guidelines
• Operational risk procedures
• Credit administration procedures
• Collateral management procedures
In addition to the above, I was an active contributor to the quarterly risk committee presentations identifying core and mobile banking risk events. I also developed a framework for identifying operational KRIs by regularly interacting with the operational risk unit. I regularly provided feedback on newly designed product programs or any subsequent updates to the existing ones. I was actively involved in negotiations with the insurers in order to ensure risk transfer to be cost-effective and comprehensive. I also conducted periodic stress testing of the portfolio as laid out by the State Bank of Pakistan. A post-disbursal credit monitoring function was also been developed by me, which in fact augmented the pre-approval functionality of the bank.
