What happens if symptoms return?
After being treated for C. difficile-associated diarrhea, some patients may experience the same symptoms again up to three months later. If this happens, call your doctor to find out if you have C. difficile-associated diarrhea again.
What is C. difficile and how does it spread?
C. difficile is an environmental bacteria that can be normally found in the GI tract. It can also survive a long period of time as a chemical and heat resistant spore. When a person has C. difficile associated diarrhea, the bacteria and spores in the stool can remain on surfaces such as toilets, handles, bedpans, or commode chairs. When touching these items, the bacteria and spores can be transferred to our hands. If we then touch our mouth we can swallow the bacteria and spores and introduce them into our bowel. If we touch other surfaces, we can also spread C. difficile to new surfaces.
What should I do at home?
Healthy people like your family and friends who are not taking antibiotics are at very low risk of getting C. difficile-associated diarrhea. The best prevention is PROPER HANDWASHING.
Proper handwashing
To wash your hands properly:
1. Turn on tap and wet hands with warm water
2. Apply soap and lather onto hands
3. Wash both sides of hands and between fingers for at least 15 seconds
4. Rinse hands well under running water
5. Pat hands dry with paper towel and turn off tap with paper towel
Do this after
using the
washroom, after
touching dirty
surfaces, before
eating and before
preparing meals.

What patients and family members need to know about Antibiotic-associated Diarrhea?
Who should read this?
Antibiotics are effective in treating bacterial
infections and should be prescribed only
when necessary.
If you have (a) received antibiotics or (b)
have been prescribed antibiotics that you are
to take following discharge from hospital,
please review this brochure. If you have
any concerns or questions, ask your doctor,
pharmacist or nurse.
What is Antibiotic-associated?
Diarrhea?
About 5-35% of people may experience
diarrhea when or shortly after taking an
antibiotic.
Antibiotics change the normal balance of
bacteria in your bowel, which may change
normal bowel function, leading to diarrhea.
What is Clostridium difficile - associated
Diarrhea?
When the normal balance of bacteria in your bowel is changed by antibiotics, this change may allow harmful bacteria such as C.difficile, if present in your bowel, to overgrow and produce toxins, thereby causing severe diarrhea and other symptoms. C. difficile-associated diarrhea must be treated by a physician.
What are the symptoms?
Not all antibiotic-associated diarrhea is caused by C. difficile. Most often, antibiotic-associated diarrhea is mild, consisting of loose and/or frequent bowel movements, and resolves spontaneously.
If you are taking an antibiotic and you have mild
diarrhea which is not bothersome, continue to
take the antibiotic as prescribed, even if you are
feeling better. The diarrhea should go away after the antibiotic is finished.
Symptoms of C. difficile-associated diarrhea may be more severe. CALL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS:
• 3 or more episodes of loose/watery diarrhea in a 24 hour period;
• Black or bright red stools;
• Severe abdominal (stomach) pain or cramping;
• Persistent or worsening abdominal pain;
• Swollen or hard abdomen;
• Fever 38 ºC or greater;
• Diarrhea which continues after the antibiotic(s) is finished;
• Diarrhea which starts after you have finished
taking the antibiotic(s).
How will your doctor diagnose
and treat Clostridium difficile associated
Diarrhea?
• Remind your doctor that you have been taking
antibiotics recently;
• Your doctor will request a sample of your
watery stools;
• The laboratory will test the stool to see if
C. difficile toxins are present;
• You may need to repeat the test if the result is
negative.
How can you take care of yourself?
• DO NOT take anti-diarrhea medications
that you can buy without a prescription (e.g.
Imodium® (loperamide), Kaopectate®),
without first checking with your doctor. These
may cause a more serious health condition;
• Follow your doctor’s advice regarding rest,
activity, medication and diet;
• Wash your hands frequently, especially after
using the washroom;
• If your doctor prescribes a new antibiotic for
your diarrhea, take ALL of the medication as
prescribed;
• Drink plenty of clear fluids to keep yourself
hydrated;
• For symptomatic relief, eat a milk product free,
low sugar diet and cooked vegetables;
re-introduce these foods slowly once treatment
is finished;
• Aim to have one bowel movement a day to
ensure elimination of C. difficile.

• 24시간 내에 세 번 이상의 묽은변/물설사 경우;
• 흑색변 또는 선홍색변;
• 심한 복부(위)통증 또는 경련;
• 지속적이거나 악화되는 복통;
• 복부 팽만 또는 단단해진 복부;
• 38 ºC 또는 그 이상의 열;
• 항생제 복용이 끝난 이후에도 지속적인 설사;
• 담당의사에게 최근 항생제를 복용하고 있음을 상기시키십시요;
• 담당의사가 물설사의 표본을 요구할 것입니다;
• 실험실에서 클로스트리듐 디피실리균 독소가 존재하는지 확인하기 위해 검사할 것입니다;
• 담당의사와 사전 상의 없이, 처방전 없이 구매할 수 있는 지사제를 복용하지 마십시요 (예를 들면, 모디엄(로페라미드), 카오펙타트): Imodium® (loperamide), Kaopectate®. 이는 건강상태 악화를 초래할 수도 있습니다;
• 휴식, 활동, 투약 그리고 음식에 관련 하여 담당의사의 조언을 따르십시요;
• 손을 자주 씻으십시요. 특별히 화장실을 사용 한 이후에요;
• 담당의사가 설사때문에 새 항생제를 처방하면, 처방받은 모든 약을 투약하십시요;
• 수분을 유지하도록 위해 많은 양의 맑은 음료를 섭취하십시요;
• 증상완화를 위해서는 무유제품, 저당류 식품과 익힌 채소를 섭취하십시요;
치료가 끝난 후 이 제품들을 천천히 재시작하십시요;
