Science and Art
AVdB Angelo, I would like to take your work as a starting point.
Over the past years, the art world got to know you for your bio-installations. With regards to this, it keeps being pointed out that you obtained a Ph.D. in Biology and thus made a transition from science to art.
At the same time, you went through an evolution in your artistic work that made you approach science again. I refer to the link you make between visual art and a certain laboratory situation. This seems to me the perfect opportunity to embark on a discussion about the relationship between science and art in a broader perspective. Recently, I’ve seen your installation Blue Shift [LOG. 1] (2005) at the Warande in Turnhout. If you had to give a brief description of this installation to someone who’s completely unfamiliar with the concept, what would you tell him?
AV I’m conducting, in a very explicit way, an experiment over there, for which I worked together with Luc De Meester, an evolutionary biologist and a former colleague of mine. It involves an installation in which a miniature eco-system is been composed with different organisms placed within a series of large glass aquaria. The idea behind it was to alter the light-sensitive behaviour of water fleas. These small animals happen to be extremely sensitive to several colours of light: they’re really drawn to yellow light and they’re very afraid of blue light. There’s a biological explanation for this. Yellow light indicates potentially cloudy water and consequently dissolving food particles, blue light indicates clear water and consequently visibility for fish, their biggest enemies. The advantage of applying these phenomena artistically is that you can work in a very visual manner. The system existed of aquaria with fish and water fleas, with lighting on the top and perforations in the bottom which served as a dividing wall and prevented the fish from swimming up. In stand-by, the light was yellow and the fleas resided near the top, against the surface of the water. But as soon as a visitor approached to have a closer look at the installation, the blue lights flashed on and the water fleas fled through the holes of the double layered bottom. Upon which the fish, very quickly, eliminated the biggest part of the water fleas.
AVdB Isn’t that slightly sadistic? What was the purpose of this?
AV We actually wanted to see if it was possible to change the behaviour of the water fleas during the period of the exhibition by doing a Darwinistic experiment. Only those water fleas which were barely or not at all afraid of the blue light would survive and reproduce themselves. A classical example of survival of the fittest. In actual fact, it also is a way of unnatural selection: we create organisms which in real nature couldn’t possibly survive because they swim, in a reflex movement, to open water where they immediately will be eaten by fish.
AVdB That all sounds fairly scientific!
AV Yes, because of the criticism I received on my former creations – some people see it as a cheap way of getting desired results – I wanted to create something that very explicitly had two different parts to it: a scientific one and an artistic one. On a regular basis there are comments about the added value of my installations on the artistic level; it would all be a bit too easily achieved. I would just impress with elements from the scientific world – as if I would step into a laboratory, take out some equipment and simply place it into the art world. I would crush spectators with some kind of technological and intellectual baggage. I get blamed that it wouldn’t be a coincidence I could profile myself rather quickly in art and that this is being talked about, because I do actually have high academic credentials.
AVdB That seems the sort of comment you’re likely to get.
AV Still, I can easily refute that criticism.
Not one laboratory is as aesthetically pleasing as my installations.
Operational labs are much duller, and a lot dirtier too, especially the ecological labs in which you work with living animals and plants that you have to breed, and you can’t possibly keep those surroundings spotless all the time. My installations are a lot more plastic in their design, with a lot of attention to visual expression, a little bit comparable with making a sculpture. So it is not correct that I would simply copy things. And, purely as a form, the lab completely doesn’t appeal to me. It is an important aspect, but definitely not the essence of my work. I am not interested in introducing the laboratory into art to make a critical statement about science. Obviously, other artists are doing this. But this is not what I am aiming for.
Aesthetics of the laboratory
AVdB How do I have to see the laboratory then in your approach?
AV The resemblance in form with the laboratory is actually rather a consequence of my way of working, in which I am searching for some way of dealing with reality. To position myself in that reality, that’s what a lot of my art is about. With regards to my bio-installations there’s a need to connect myself in a creative way with the organic and living reality. And that automatically brings you to the formal environment of the laboratory. As with scientists, the form here also serves the function. Scientists also don’t install a laboratory because of some kind of romantic interest in a Frankenstein-like decor. Of course not. But the difference between me and a scientist is that I can’t help but to give that form its own character.
AVdB I think the experimental situation itself is the essence, rather than the laboratory that is not more than a derivative.
Av Indeed.
AVdB With some of your earlier work I didn’t always feel it was about a laboratory. You’ve done numerous other things that look differently. However, the idea of a certain experimental setting is always present. What I find intriguing, what is the essential difference with a biological experiment? When you do something like that, what is your intention? You’re saying: ‘Look, I’m stepping into a biological setting and I’m doing an experiment, but I will be doing it as an artist.’ What does that mean then? Will it also touch on the essence of the experiment? In all your writings and also in your interviews you are saying time and again; ‘Yes, the result for me is completely unpredictable.’ However, that can also be said about certain scientific experiments. As a criterion this doesn’t seem sufficient to me to define the difference. I even get the impression, as a spectator, that you are setting up experiments that are completely useless. That, by doing so, the aesthetic function becomes much more important. So, the uselessness, the absurdity almost, leads in itself to the aesthetic experience and the artistic field. That is also an interesting point for me as an art philosopher. Reflections upon art, since long, associate the aesthetic experience with the non-utilitarian. There’s a kind of contradiction between, on the one hand, the utilitarian, scientific experiment and, on the other hand...
AV Look, for me, the artistic aspect obviously not only lies in the formal aestheticism or the unpredictability of the work. Blue Shift [LOG.1] was based on a strong concept with a lot of humour. It’s a study that literally had to be completed by the spectator. Without spectators there would be no blue light and no Darwinian evolution. Or, like Duchamp said: ‘The creative act is also performed by the spectator’ But, to get back to your remark, what exactly do you mean with ‘utilitarian?’
AVdB With utilitarian I mean that the experiment has to deliver results that can be applied in science.
AV In that respect, art obviously never is utilitarian. Then, it’s only natural that I, like all artists, don’t do anything utilitarian, expect for Blue Shift [LOG.1] where I wanted to join the utilitarian approach with the absurdity. That was just so interesting for me, to let those two choices coincide.
On the one hand, I had scientific discussions with Luc De Meester, an experienced researcher who worked passionately with me on the ecological side of the project, and on the other hand, when I was at the exhibition, I felt more inclined to communicate with the spectators about the artistic side of the work, also because a multi-layered audience limits the depth of scientific discussions. You see, for me, that creation offered me a frame in which I could communicate at the same time with nature, an audience and with truly specialised scientists. I’ve created a platform where I could simultaneously gain insight in many different areas, initiate discussions and freely let those areas interact with each other.
AVdB Then it did have a utilitarian concept?
AV Certainly. Blue Shift [LOG.1] definitely contained something utilitarian. I will definitely not deny that. Besides, from in the beginning that was an important part of the whole idea.
AVdB There are a number of other aspects that return in your artistic work. What do you see, in general, as the most important parameters for your art?

Wetenschap en Kunst
AVdB Angelo, ik zou graag vertrekken vanuit jouw werk.
De laatste jaren ben je in de kunstwereld bekend geworden
dankzij jouw bio-installaties. Daarbij wordt steevast beklemtoond
dat je gepromoveerd bent in de biologie en dat
je dus een stap hebt gezet van de wetenschap naar de kunst.
Tegelijkertijd heb je in je artistieke werk een evolutie doorgemaakt
waarin je opnieuw meer toenadering zoekt tot de wetenschap.
Ik doel op het feit dat je een link legt tussen beeldende
kunst en een soort van laboratoriumsituatie. Het lijkt mij een
ideaal aanknopingspunt om de bredere thematiek van de relatie
tussen wetenschap en kunst te bespreken. Ik heb onlangs in
de Warande in Turnhout jouw installatie Blue Shift [LOG. 1]
(2005) gezien. Als je deze installatie voor een wildvreemde
kort zou moeten beschrijven, wat zou je dan zeggen?
AV Ik doe daar heel expliciet een experiment, waarvoor ik
heb samengewerkt met Luc De Meester, een evolutionair bioloog
en een vroegere collega van me. Het gaat om een installatie
waarin een miniatuurecosysteem wordt samengesteld met
verschillende organismen in een reeks grote glazen aquaria
(afbeelding 1). De achterliggende idee was om het lichtgevoelige
gedrag van watervlooien te wijzigen. Deze kleine dieren zijn
namelijk enorm gevoelig aan diverse lichtkleuren: ze zijn
enorm aangetrokken tot geel licht en hebben een grote schrik
van blauw licht. Daar is een biologische reden voor. Geel licht
betekent mogelijk troebel water en dus voedseldeeltjes in
oplossing, blauw licht betekent helder water en dus zichtbaarheid
voor vissen, hun grootste vijanden. Het voordeel van het
artistiek toepassen van deze fenomenen is dat je heel visueel
kan werken. Het systeem bestond uit aquaria met vissen en
watervlooien, met bovenaan verlichting en onderaan een geperforeerde
bodem, die als scheidingswand functioneerde en
de vissen verhinderde om naar boven te zwemmen. In stand-by
was de verlichting geel en bevonden de watervlooien zich bovenaan,
tegen het wateroppervlak. Maar van zodra een bezoeker
de installatie van naderbij kwam bekijken, sprongen er
blauwe lampen aan en vluchtten de watervlooien doorheen de gaten van de dubbele bodem naar beneden. Waarop de vissen
heel snel het grootste deel van de watervlooien elimineerden.
AVdB Is dat niet een beetje sadistisch? Wat was de
bedoeling daarvan?
AV We wilden eigenlijk bekijken of het mogelijk was om
tijdens de duur van de tentoonstelling het gedrag van de
watervlooien te wijzigen, en dit onder de vorm van een
Darwinistisch experiment. Enkel die watervlooien die nauwelijks
of geen schrik hadden van blauw licht zouden overleven
en zich voortplanten. Een schoolvoorbeeld van survival of the
fittest. Het is in feite ook een vorm van tegennatuurlijke selectie:
we creëren organismen die in de echte natuur volstrekt
niet kunnen overleven omdat ze reflexmatig naar open water
zwemmen en daar onmiddellijk door vissen worden opgegeten.
AVdB Klinkt allemaal behoorlijk wetenschappelijk!
AV Ja, naar aanleiding van kritiek die ik had gekregen op
vorige werken – sommige mensen verwijten me een vorm van
goedkoop effectbejag – wilde ik een werk maken dat heel expliciet
op twee verschillende benen stond: wetenschappelijk én
artistiek. Regelmatig worden er kanttekeningen gemaakt bij de
artistieke meerwaarde van mijn installaties; het zou allemaal
een beetje te gratuit zijn. Ik zou gewoon indruk maken met
elementen die uit de wetenschapswereld komen – alsof ik een
labo binnenstap, daar apparatuur weghaal en dat vervolgens
eenvoudigweg in de kunstwereld plaats. Ik zou zo toeschouwers
verpletteren met een soort van technologische en intellectuele
bagage. Men verwijt me dan ook dat het niet toevallig
is dat ik me vrij snel heb kunnen profileren in de kunst en daar
ook aandacht rond krijg, omdat ik nu eenmaal academisch gepromoveerd
ben.
AVdB Het is een commentaar die niet denkbeeldig is, lijkt me.
AV Toch kan ik die kritiek ook gemakkelijk weerleggen.
Geen enkel labo ziet er zo esthetisch uit als mijn installaties.
Operationele labo’s zien er veel saaier uit, veel vuiler ook, zeker
ecologische labo’s; je werkt met levende dieren en planten
die je moet kweken, en dat is nu eenmaal niet altijd kraaknet
te houden. Mijn installaties zijn veel plastischer vormgegeven,
waarbij ik erg let op de visuele zeggingskracht, een beetje
vergelijkbaar met het maken van een sculptuur. Dus het klopt
niet dat ik dingen eenvoudigweg zou overnemen. En puur als
vorm boeit het labo mij absoluut niet. Het is wel een belangrijk
aspect, maar het is zeker niet de essentie van mijn werk. Ik ben
niet geïnteresseerd om het laboratorium in de kunst binnen te
brengen om er een kritisch statement te doen over de wetenschap.
Daar zijn uiteraard andere kunstenaars wel mee bezig,
maar mijn insteek is het niet.
De esthetiek van het laboratorium
AVdB Hoe moet ik het laboratorium dan wel plaatsen in
je benadering?
AV De vormelijke gelijkenis met het laboratorium is eigenlijk
eerder een gevolg van mijn manier van werken, waarbij ik
een soort omgang zoek met de realiteit. Me positioneren binnen
die realiteit, daar draait veel van mijn kunst rond. In het
geval van mijn bio-installaties gaat het om een behoefte om
me op een creatieve manier te verbinden met de organische,
levende realiteit. En dan kom je automatisch uit bij een vorm
als het laboratorium. Net als bij wetenschappers volgt de vorm
dus ook hier de functie. Wetenschappers maken ook geen laboratorium
omwille van één of andere romantische interesse in
een Frankensteinachtig decor. Natuurlijk niet. Maar het onderscheid
tussen mezelf en een wetenschapper is dat ik het niet
kan nalaten om die vorm dan toch een eigen karakter geven.
AVdB Ik denk dat die experimentele situatie zelf de essentie is,
eerder dan het laboratorium, dat niet meer dan een afgeleide is.
AV Inderdaad.
AVdB Bij sommige van jouw vroegere werken had ik niet
altijd het idee dat het om een laboratorium ging. Je hebt immers
allerlei andere dingen gedaan die er niet zo uitzien. Er
is wel altijd het idee van een soort van experimentele setting.
Wat me intrigeert is, wat is het wezenlijke verschil met een
biologisch experiment? Als jij zoiets doet, wat is jouw intentie?
Je zegt: “Kijk eens, ik begeef me binnen een biologische
setting en ik doe daar een experiment, maar ik doe dat wel als
kunstenaar.” Wat betekent dit hier? Wordt het experiment ook
in zijn wezen aangetast? In al je geschriften en ook in interviews
zeg je keer op keer: “Ja, het resultaat is bij mij volstrekt
onvoorspelbaar.” Dat kan echter ook worden beweerd over
bepaalde wetenschappelijke experimenten. Het lijkt me als
criterium niet voldoende om te definiëren wat het verschil is.
Ik heb als toeschouwer zelfs de indruk dat jij als het ware totaal
nutteloze experimenten uitvoert. Dat daardoor ook de esthetiek
veel belangrijker wordt. Dus door het nutteloze, door
het absurde bijna, komen we als vanzelf op het domein van
de esthetische ervaring en het artistieke. Dat is voor mij ook
interessant als kunstfilosoof. In het denken over kunst wordt
de esthetische ervaring al vanouds geassocieerd met het nietutilitaire.
Je kan hier van een soort van tegenstelling spreken
tussen enerzijds het utilitaire, wetenschappelijke experiment,
en anderzijds …
AV Kijk, het artistieke zit voor mij uiteraard niet alleen in de
formele esthetiek of het onvoorspelbare van het werk. Blue
Shift [LOG. 1] had een sterk conceptuele insteek, waarin ook
heel wat humor schuilde. Het is een werk dat letterlijk door de
toeschouwer moest worden vervolledigd. Zonder toeschouwers
geen blauw licht en geen Darwiniaanse evolutie. Of zoals
Duchamp zei: “De toeschouwer schept mede.” Maar, om terug
te komen op je opmerking, wat bedoel je precies met ‘utilitair’?
AVdB Onder utilitair versta ik dat het experiment resultaten
moet opleveren die wetenschappelijk kunnen worden verwerkt.
AV In dat opzicht is kunst natuurlijk nooit utilitair. Dan is
het maar normaal dat ik zoals alle kunstenaars geen utilitaire
dingen doe, behalve in Blue Shift [LOG. 1], waarin ik het utilitaire
en het absurde wou samenbrengen. Dat vond ik zelf ook
zo interessant, dat ik die twee keuzes kon laten samenvallen.
Aan de ene kant had ik wetenschappelijke discussies met Luc
De Meester, een ervaren onderzoeker die meewerkte aan de
ecologische onderbouw van het project en daar ook helemaal
in opging. En aan de andere kant, als ik op de tentoonstelling
zelf was, kreeg ik veel meer de reflex om over de artistieke
aspecten van het werk te communiceren met de toeschouwers,
ook al omdat je met een breed publiek wetenschappelijk niet
erg diep kan gaan. Zie je, voor mij bood dat werk een kader
waarin ik met de natuur kon communiceren, én met het publiek,
én met echt gespecialiseerde wetenschappers. Zo creëerde
ik een platform waarbij ik op vele terreinen tegelijkertijd
inzichten kon verwerven, discussies op gang kon brengen en in
alle vrijheid aan kruisbestuiving kon doen.
AVdB Dan zat er toch een utilitair concept aan vast.
AV Natuurlijk, in het werk Blue Shift [LOG. 1] zat absoluut
iets utilitairs. Dat zal ik zeker niet ontkennen. Het was trouwens
van in het begin een belangrijk deel van het ganse opzet.
AVdB In je artistieke werk komen tal van andere aspecten aan
bod. Wat zijn volgens jou, meer algemeen, de belangrijkste parameters
die terugkeren in je kunst?
