Looking at the illustration the gap does look like the shape of a cap.
Christine, this book was published in Barcelona so you are probably right

@Jane What you say makes sense. Calota/calotte also means a skull cap, by the way. It's the same shape, I suppose.

I think Charles is right with the 'calotte' with the cap item rather than the link. Just thinking about what action is being described, when attaching a rivet to a soft piece of material, something is being used to support the soft piece of material while banging the rivet through. Calota also means hubcab which is obviously not the meaning here, but the author has put it in quotation marks and the shape of this item would work for the process described.

I have found no sign anywhere of the term "cavota" in Spanish, either in relation to jewellery or anything else. The only similar term I can discover anywhere, by looking in dictionaries of jewellery, is "calota". The corresponding term in English, taken from French, is calotte. It often means a type of cap, and indeed it can mean a watch cap:

But it can also be a type of link, which seems to fit the context here.

This is a Catalan word, as Chris says (and it is misspelled, the proper spelling is "cabota"

The first meaning of this is "nail head" and this concept is the idea here, though they clearly do not refer to any nails, thus the term has been incorrectly chosen.

The word for this in Spanish is "recalcado", and its translation is "upsetting"
