analyze their progress and confirm that they are ready to move to the next book
I remember from grade school that we were assigned different books based on our reading skills, and then every so often there would be an evaluation to see if we were ready for the next book. I read "paso" as referring to the move to the next book.
If you don't want to put in "ready" (since it's not explicit in the original) you could go with "confirm that they can move to the next book."

to analyze and confirm the progress and pace toward the next book

to analize and verify their progress and possible change to the next book
