I've searched on "counter-shaft" in the context of dart throwers and/or lances, and I don't get any hits. Does anyone know what this technical term is in English? TIA!

nock
as marked in yellow in reference. You may already have noted that source term is "contra-astil" not "counter-astil".

Reference:
Note from asker:
Deborah: Sorry about the goof in the source term! About nock, M-W says: either of two tips of horn fastened on the ends of a bow and having notches for holding the string (2) : one of the notches cut in these or in the bow itself b (1) : the part of an arrow having a notch for the bowstring whether as formerly a thick bulbous wooden end containing the notch or as now usually an attached fixture (as of horn or plastic) : the butt end of any arrow (2) : the notch itself. So, I think here the reference is to another thin long piece of wood rather than what I've seen called "knocking point" itself. Apart from what Eski posted, in English, the astil is called the "dart" and the contra-astil is the "handle". Thanks for your answer...it drove me to do more research! ¡Saludos! |
