Japanese term

ヒューマンドラマ

Japanese to English Other Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
ヒューマンドラマが好きで主人公に感情移入して涙を流したりする.
(This is talking about a 35-year-old guy and what TV shows he watches, etc.)

What is a ヒューマンドラマ??? And how would this be translated? (or is it the name of a show?)

Thanks.

humanistic dramas

Maybe, it would be literally more like humanistic drama(s)?? We notice the following phrase "主人公に感情移入して涙を流す", from which we guess there are apparent emotional rises and falls on the author/viewer as the story involves such "humanistic" elements that even bring tears to his eyes.

Human Drama - Soap Opera?

Hi Conejo,

My wife watches all these Korean dramas tat are astonishingly popular over here right now, and she calls them human dramas. I've watched a couple of episodes and to me they're soap operas. Normal people going about their normal lives, but insane plot driven things happen to them. In one show she's watching a woman just accidentally married her own brother. I can just picture the writers meeting "God, we're really running out of ideas here, we really need to stop this marriage from happening, but how?.......Wait, I think I've got it!"
There may be a better term out there, but if the shows are anything like that, it's a Soap!
Hope that helps.
All the best

That said, maybe Human Drama is a good enough translation? It's not the name of a show, but of a genre of shows after all. Soap Opera is probably too narrow. I guess it could also cover portrayals of real events - people overcoming the odds, that sort of thing.

Human Drama

Well, this is obviously what the katakana says. Like Owen says, it is a genre about the human condition. Like the movies listed here: http://www6.airnet.ne.jp/catseye/sub1/sub2/movie7.html
However, I would have to disagree that they can be called soap operas. I believe soap operas are usually called TVドラマ or 連続メロドラマ. That said, I'm not sure if "Human Drama" is the best name for this genre in English. There might be something better.
Peer comment(s):

agree Owen Davies : Yes, soap opera is'nt quite right. There must be an English TV word for this, just can't think of one. Note to self, watch more TV! Chewing gum for the eyes anyone?

Thanks, Owen. I watch way too much TV, but I still can't think of a better term.

tear-jerker drama

Depends on how colloquial you can be.
