German term

Aufsetzend auch auf...

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general)
Context:

"Aufsetzend auch auf vorhandener Hardware erschließt eine skalierbare Software auch die nicht offensichtlichen Einsparpotenziale."

I would have thought that this would be something along the lines of "drawing on ...", but that doesn't seem to work well here, especially not in combination with the multiple auchs.

Discussion

Anne-Katrin Grube May 5, 2010:
Nicola Wood May 5, 2010:
See what happens when you go away and think about it! I realise that it may depend on whether what is important is the hardware or the software. Another possible interpretation could be that the software is maximising the advantages gained by installing the hardware. Then the sentence could read something like : "Building even further on the hardware in question a scalable software package is able to make savings which were otherwise not at all obvious."
Bernd Runge May 5, 2010:
Using existing/installed hardware ... würde ich irgendwo in deinem Satz unterbringen, denn - using kann sooo viel verschiedene Bedeutungen haben und hat mir schon so manches Mal Kopfzerbrechen bereitet ;-)
Nicola Wood May 5, 2010:
I keep thinking about it and you are right the auchs make it difficult but I think the sense is that the spoftware is even able to make use of exisiting hardware to make savings that are not immediately obvious/ one would not expect.
Nicola Wood May 5, 2010:
I'm not confident enough to post an answer, but my immediate thought was "building on", and from there I got to "exploiting" or "making use of hardware that is already available/installed".
David Williams (asker) May 5, 2010:
Draft translation My rather verbose draft is probably too literal:

Drawing, amongst other things, on the hardware installed, scalable software is even able to exploit potential savings that are not immediately evident.

what's more...

What’s more, scalable software will unlock additional savings potential through the integration with pre-installed hardware.
