the information is confidential, but with all of your help I've pretty much gathered what the author is talking about. These are files that were stolen from a company to start another one - so I guess the context would be that they are the "figures" of said firm, in that they were indeed stolen. And the original is grammatically incorrect by your reckoning - thanks.

More context, please. "Zahlenwerk" could be *any* type of results/figures/statistics, including financial statements. In addition, the German should read "... dass sie *auf* dem Zahlenwerk der Fa. XXXXXX aufbauen".
