German term

Fahrzeugvermessung

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
"Warum wird eine Fahrzeugvermessung durchgeführt?

(a) Zur Sicherheit des Kunden
(b) Um Folgeschäden zu vermeiden (z.B. einseitiges Abfahren der Reifen
(c) Zur schnellen Schadensanalyse an den Bauteilen, Achsgeometrie, Lenkung und Tridion"

This multiple choice question is from a training manual for automotive workshops about what to do when a car is being assessed for damage after an accident. I'm a little unsure of what a "Fahrzeugvermessung" involves and would appreciate any explanations and/or suggestions for a translation.

Many thanks

Ian

vehicle alignment/measurement

according to my brand new Whylidal Automobile + Technik, there are lots of Vermessungen undertaken on vehicles - and they mostly have to do with the alignment/measurement of the wheels, the chassis, the frame etc. This would tie in one-side wear of the tyres - due to misalignment.

agree Brandis (X) : I think so.

agree Steve L : I agree. I have worked 10 years in the automotive branch and Fahrzeugvermessung means "wheel alignment".

Thanks Steve, even after 1740 days!
agree Ivo Steinhoff : I agree. Fahrzeugvermessung IS vehicle alignment, not only of wheels, but also for steering, chassi and frame. BTW item (c) of question explains all. Nothing about "Vehicle assessment".

Vehicle audit

Just an alternative and more general interpretation of 'Vermessung'.

'Survey' seems to relate more to real estate and land.

I've also encountered 'vermessen' in motor vehicle diagnostics where it is translated as 'calibrate'. Just to confuse the issue!
